Hindustan Motor Ambassador plant in Uttarpara, West Bengal shut down
|   Tuesday, June 10, 2014
Hindustan Motors is an iconic name in automobile market of India. They have been in production for a long time, a few years after India's independence. They have had a few records with their Ambassador, and were second in longest ongoing production based on platform and not on model name. History of Hindustan Motors Ambassador is a unique one. They started out as Morris Oxford II in United Kingdom a long time back. When it arrived it India it was manufactured and sold under this new name.
From then onwards this car has been witness to many histories in the making.

First question in automobile market all over the world is that with Hindustan Motors Ambassador out of this equation, will it be possible for any other car to overtake Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle as longest ongoing production on basis of platform and not model name. Surely there are a few contenders for it, but none as promising as this one in question. This marks the end of a wonderful era of smooth driving combined with elegance and comfort that has been an integral part of development in automobile industry of India.

Coming down to a more local level, there are certain reasons why this car has ceased its production. Last of its manufacturing plants was located in Uttarpara, West Bengal. In a recent letter, authorities of this company have declared that they have decided to close this manufacturing plant indefinitely. They have cited a number of reasons for this as well, and all of them are justified reasons. Still, Hindustan Motors Ambassador being an iconic car of India, people cannot take its sudden disappearance normally. Surely there would be Hindustan Motors Ambassador roaming the streets of India, but no new person will have opportunity to own a new one.

Coming to the reasons cited by authorities, most significant of them is a lack of demand. In earlier days, most of Indian politicians owned at least one, if not more, Hindustan Motors Ambassador. All other well reputed citizens of India regarded this to be a privilege and a symbol of power and status as well. With introduction of many foreign brands of car in this country, this trend has somewhat died out. So there has been a lack of demand for this car. Also, there is an acute lack of fund as well, as has been mentioned by the authorities.

Sales of this car have decreased drastically over last few decades. It reached an all time low of 2000 annually pretty recently. Although in West Bengal it is the preferred vehicle to be used as taxis or cabs, sale has decreased in all other parts of the country. Another reason for closing this plant in Uttarpara, West Bengal is low productivity. All these reasons combined have been really drastic for the company. Still, they have managed to keep some hope alive, declaring in their letter, telling they have closed the plant indefinitely till they can draw up plans for its revival.
