Head of Citroen Announces 2 Distinct Ranges: The Current DS And The New C-Line
|   Wednesday, May 22, 2013
Lately, it was rumored that the idea behind the success of the Dacia brand will motivate the launching of another low-cost brand from the other global manufacturers. The names bandied were Peugeot and the Citroen, two brands with problems who are trying to recover from a financial standpoint. It seems that Citroen will change the orientation of its models, but will not address the low-cost philosophy and will not compete with Dacia.

These working practices are supported even by Frederic Banzet, Citroen CEO.
He revealed that the brand he leads will separate into two distinct identities in the next period. The Premium DS (Distinctive Spirit) line will remain and will continue to provide high quality products with a high price. These products are intended for competition with the Germans rivals Audi, BMW and Mercedes. Citroen currently has three models DS (DS3, DS4 and DS5). The current volume products will be repositioned, and will give rise to a new range, called C-Line.

It is interesting to see what position the C-Elysee sedan model will have in the new C-line family. It looks somewhat like the C-Elysee was released faster than the range that it would be a part of.

The first Citroen Elysee was a compact sedan produced between 2003-2013 for the Chinese market by a joint venture between the Peugeot-Citroen Group and the Chinese manufacturer Dongfeng Motor. A face-lifted version of the C-Elysee was introduced in April 2008. The second generation of the C-Elysee will be available starting March 2013. The exterior immediately defines the car as a member of the Citroen new design style. Inside, the design is optimized for space and comfort and there is a wide range of high-tech equipment to choose from. The C-Elysee is available in seven body colors, with different chrome details depending on the level of trim.

The first model to inaugurate this line will be the new generation of the small C3. The first C-line car is expected to be the replacement for the old C3 supermini, which is described as being "competitively priced" as opposed to being a low-cost rival for the Renault Dacia brand. Frederic Banzet says that the model was "inspired" by the radical C-Cactus concept from 2007 (presented in 2007 at Frankfurt). The new C3 and the other models of the line C-Line will target customers who want a perfect balance between cost and functionality.

To reduce the price of cars various options will be needed, including a reduction in production costs. According to Banzet, the production costs for the C-line models will be held down by simplifying the range line-up and, for example, reducing the number of drivetrain options.

However, Citroen says that it will avoid falling into the trap of competing solely on price and will continue using the bold styling that "really sets us apart". The design will be one to win customers. Models such as Fiat 500 or Citroen DS3 have proven that a new design may very well sell a car.
In this situation, the question remains, what will happen with Peugeot? In all probability, the range will try to reserve a larger piece of the European market of customers with claims.
