Group Owning Google To Launch First Taxi Service With Driverless Cars
|   Tuesday, December 05, 2017
For almost a decade autonomous cars could be found on public roads, but always with a person behind the wheel.
But Waymo, Alphabet group's autonomous vehicle division, will soon be launching taxi-minibuses without drivers, according to Bloomberg.

Waymo will provide this pilot service in a limited Phoenix region with volunteer passengers. The initiative, the first of its kind for a company, is a reference point in Alphabet's attempt, Google's parent company, to be a leader in the commercial use of autonomous vehicle technology.

The service will be launched soon and will allow people to reserve their vehicles through a mobile application similar to Uber and Lyft, said Waymo general manager John Krafcik at the Lisbon Summit web conference.

Waymo entered into a partnership with Lyft, but details of the agreement have not been made public.
Waymo vehicles were tested without a driver in a test center in downtown California, where the company recently invited reporters to attend these tests. Chrysler minivans have a small graphic interface on the back seat that allows travelers to follow the route and buttons to call customer service or turn off the car.

Waymo autonomous vehicles traveled greater distances than cars belonging to other companies that develop similar technology, including Ford Motor and Uber Technologies. But those companies have production capabilities, like car makers, or passenger networks such as Uber, which Waymo is lacking.

Some US federal states have laws requiring a person to be in the driver's seat, but Waymo and other companies are opposed tot his. In October, the California regulators withdrew this provision, paving the way for others to follow suit.
