Gordon Murray's T25, T27 Minicars: Any Closer To Showrooms?
|   Thursday, June 07, 2012
In recent years many have gone and announced work on electric cars and hybrids as a way to keep pace with the eco trend. Among those announces we had Gordon Murray and their minicars. Just like any other start-up company, they have plans to take over the world, but a defining characteristic of there is the almost complete silence surrounding numbers.

The public only had to go with bits and pieces of info, compensated by the release of pictures concerning its cars, first in the concept, then prototype and now in a near completed state.
The guys from Britain's Autocar have hoped on board the miniscule cars to take them for a ride and the results were surprisingly positive.

The T25, powered by a gasoline engine doesn't have any outstanding engineering ideas behind it. We have 3 seats, and behind them the engine which powers the rear wheels. The seats are arranged in a wedge, and, surprisingly, the T25 has more storage room than the Smart ForTwo. Not just when it comes to storage space is this car superior, but any kind of room. The cabin is remarkably spacious.

Parts of the ForTwo can, however be found in the essential areas: the engine and transmission. Both have been further refined in the way of reducing friction and cutting down on the huge lag between gear changes the ForTwo is known for.

The British journalists praise the panoramic view, the tight turning circle and overall agility of the T25. Furthermore, it seems the car is quite secure in the event of a crash. That will have to be officially tested, but the minicar claims to be as safe as a MINI or as a Ford Fiesta.

The diminutive sizes of the car make driving in the congested cities of Europe a real pleasure. Naturally, that was the purpose of the car in the first place, but it is remarkable how well it turned out to be. Also, the T25 can reach 90 mph with its 51 horsepower engine, so you can actually get around in traffic quite fast.

The electric version, the T27, is also a minicar worthy of recognition. The batteries provide enough juice for 4 hours of driving, during which 100 miles can be covered. Top speed is capped at 65 mph. The ride quality was described as being "on the supple side of sporty," thanks to excellent handling and superior acceleration. Overall, the Renault Twizy and Smart ForTwo Electric Drive, the closest rivals to the minicar really have something to fear.

That is, if the T25 and T27 actually make it to production. Even if it does, don't expect it be sold in the US. Also, Murray will not be building the cars, instead planning to license the cars to a manufacturer with an adequate production capability. The iStream tech developed will also have the same fate.

Therefore, if anyone is interested in producing the car all he has to do is buy a license, and he can actually use the iStream tech to produce its very own minicar. Well, we'll see what the future holds.
