Goodyear Reinvents The Wheel At Geneva - Eagle 360 Spherical Tire That Doesn't Require Suspension

The future of tires will be truly hi-tech. The Americans from Goodyear give us a SF sample with the Eagle 360 tires, which have a spherical shape, and shall be keeping the car on the road using magnetic levitation.

Although an Auto Salon is usually focused on the world premieres of cars, related companies manage sometimes to get our attention with ideas that basically aim to shape the future of the automotive industry. This is the case with the newest concept tire developed by Goodyear.
This company has brought to Geneva a spherical tire, which argues that it is imagined to be mounted on fully autonomous cars of the future.

The official name of the tire is Eagle 360, and provides a number of ideas that appear for the first time on tires. Besides the unusual spherical shape, which immediately attract eyes through its originality, the tire is developed to connect to the on board computer of the car to pick up high-level handling, and also for it to mimic the textures from nature through bio-mimetic capabilities designed to radically improve the safety of your vehicle.

The most interesting aspect of Eagle 360 concept tires is related to the fact that they are connected to the car through magnetic levitation, which means that the suspension completely disappears from the landscape, the car providing an ultra-comfortable drive (or ultra-sporty depending on needs) without noise. Also, inside the tire there are integrated sensors that instantly communicate to your car, and other vehicles, the quality of the running surface, depending on the weather and adjust the angle of running to prevent wear.

The surface of the new tire developed by Goodyear is imprinted with a pattern inspired by the world of corals. The biomimetic qualities of the Eagle 360 can offer the tire novel features. For example, the rubber hardens when the asphalt is dry and softens when the asphalt is wet, so the grip offered is be perfect whatever the weather.

These tires seem to be inspired by the BB-8 robot from Star Wars, whose spherical design allows it to run on a tough and unfriendly surface. Furthermore, these tires will be integrated with a variety of mini sponges, which will help increase the volume of the tires in wet conditions and improve aquaplaning.

The Eagle 360 was not the only tire presented by Goodyear in Geneva. Another concept, this time something closer to series production, occupies a special position at its stand. The Goodyear IntelliGrip introduces the concept of intelligent tires in the automotive world.

IntelliGrip communicate through sensors with autonomous systems, which have the ability to steer a car, and gives them real information about the quality of the running surface. Spherical wheels can move the car in different directions, even sideways, which will help in tight spaces with parking. IntelliGrip technology can detect tire wear, and run only on the areas with less wear, can detect changing weather conditions, and thus command vehicle systems to adapt to them.

Even if we will not soon see cars with spherical wheels, the IntelliGrip technology could appear very soon on cars from series production, being connected to systems such the brakes, or stabilizing and suspension system, to give them information about road conditions so that the car's systems will adapt accordingly.
