GM To Invest 324 Million Euros In Developing Next Generation Chevrolet Volt
|   Wednesday, April 30, 2014
General Motors is preparing to launch the next generation of the Chevrolet Volt and Opel Ampera. The manufacturer will invest 324 million euros in the factory responsible for production of the two models.

Chevrolet Volt, General Motors' serial hybrid, will get a new generation in 2015. Mass production will soon begin in the latter part of next year. The American corporation announced significant investments in the factory responsible for production of the Volt, which will continue to build the Opel Ampera model, the Chevrolet Volt's brother.

General Motors will invest 449 million dollars in the factories that produce these two models. It will invest 384 million dollars in the Hamtramck Assembly from Detroit, and 65 million dollars for the Brownstown Battery Assembly. The investment is equivalent to 324 million euros and comes to support the development of future technologies that will make the new generation cars more attractive to customers.

In the past five years, General Motors has invested the equivalent of a billion euros in the Detroit-Hamtramck complex, in order to improve the products rolling out from it. Based on that investment, the Brownstown plant is the first large manufacturing site in the United States of lithium-ion batteries intended for vehicles, which is operated by a major manufacturer.

The Detroit Hamtramck factory will produce the Chevrolet Volt, the Cadillac ELR, and Opel Ampera, each reaching their second generation starting in 2015. They will benefit from the new generation of lithium-ion batteries developed internally by the American corporation, as well as the many other news elements meant to make them more appealing to customers.

So far, the Chevrolet Volt and its brethren platform did not manage to reach the Detroit conglomerate's sales expectations. Results say that the model has been marketed in 23 094 units in 2013 onto the United States market, barely surpassing the 100 percent electric rival from Nissan, the Leaf model, which attracted 22,610 customers. Tesla Model S completed the podium of the plug-in vehicles in the United States, with a third place finish, with approximately 18,000 units sold.

According to Reuters, which cites sources inside a Chevrolet supplier, the future Volt will be offered in a cheaper version too. This would be less equipped and have a slightly lower range.
General Motors officials have not commented on the information, preferring to say only that the Volt's recipe will not be changed. More than that, sources inside the supplier, quoted by Reuters, claimed that the next generation Chevrolet Volt will have a starting price of around 35,000 dollars after applying United States tax exemptions. If the estimates are confirmed the entry range version will be slightly cheaper, which means about 30,000 dollars.

The hybrid models of the series versions produced by General Motors at the Hamtramck plant in Detroit are sold in 33 markets worldwide.

The Chevrolet Volt, Opel Ampera, and Cadillac ELR are not the only models produced at the Hamtramck factory in Detroit. General Motors also constructs the Chevrolet Malibu and Chevrolet Impala models in this plant, to reduce the costs.
