GM Sets Up Opel Group For European Market

In order for Opel to improve its organizational structure, it has established from the 1st of July 2014 the Opel Group which assumes full responsibility for GM's business in Europe. Through this new entity, the company aggregates both responsibilities for Opel / Vauxhall, as well as the other GM operations in Europe, including Russia. Led by Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann, the board of Opel Group, which is almost identical to that of the board of Adam Opel AG, will lead GM's European business.
The new entity, similar to the Adam Opel AG, will be based in Rüsselsheim.

The newly established Opel Group reflects the field of expanded European activities. For now, Opel's management team will manage the affairs of General Motors Europe.

Employee co-determination rights are guaranteed by contract in the new organizational structure. In a press release, Dr. Wolfgang Schäfer-Klug, Chairman of the General Works Council said: "We ensured that the right of co-determination is safeguarded to the same extent despite the organizational changes." Regarding the foundation of the Opel Group with its about 100 employees, Dr. Schäfer-Klug stated: "We are happy that Opel's position has been further strengthened. From Opel's perspective, the reorganization of the European business offers more opportunities for growth and employment."

With this organizational change, the Opel Group will also take over responsibility for all economic GM brands in Europe. Therefore, the Adam Opel AG will be able to strengthen its financial base. Adam Opel AG operative activity is not affected by this reorganization.

"Today, we are more than just Opel/Vauxhall. With the Opel Group, we align our organizational and legal entity structure in Europe with the business operations. We streamline our decision making processes and increase our efficiency. In brief: this reorganization is an important step in implementing our business plan DRIVE!2022 and another sign of confidence of our parent company GM" Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann, CEO of the management board of Opel Group.

By 2022, the company aims to gain market a share of 8 percent in Europe, and to increase their profit margin to 5 percent, to further improve product quality as well as the satisfaction of its customers and employees.

Opel is focusing on three strategic goals: models, brands plus an improved market penetration. The offensive's pace fast going and set to go even faster with a total of 27 new models and 17 engines being planned for 2014 through 2018.

The second priority represents strengthening Opel's image as an emotional, approachable and German brand. The values are brought across to customers by factors such as technical innovations, German engineering skills, and good value for money.

The third priority is represented by market share and growth targets. By 2022, Opel wants to increase its market share in Germany from 7.2 to 10 percent. Across Europe (including Russia and Turkey), the company seeks to up its share from the present 5.8 percent to 8 percent. Furthermore, Opel plans to reach the second podium position in the European passenger car market by the same year alongside its British sister brand Vauxhall.
