GM Defect Death Toll Hits 27
|   Friday, October 17, 2014
GM has long put the number of deaths resulting from the ignition switch issue that resulted in the recall of 2.6 million vehicles at 13.

As of this week, 13 is no longer the standard number. According to the website of the General Motors Indemnification Program (GMIP), Kenneth Feinberg's staff has determined that 27 claims are eligible for awards under the program. The program updates its website weekly making the number of deaths

Feinberg, an attorney and victim compensation, was tasked by GM to set up and lead the GMIP.
To date, says the New York Times, the program has investigated as many as 1,371 claims. Of that total, 178 were for wrongful deaths related to the ignition switch problem. Of the second number 52 have been accepted for payment while others are still under study or are awaiting further evidence.

Feinberg, who ran a similar program for victims of the 9/11 tragedy, has been given sole discretion to determine eligible claims

GM's compensation program relates to a faulty ignition switch. The switch can fail causing a loss of power. In turn, the loss of power means the air bags won't fire, the power steering can cut out and the power brakes won't work.

The most egregious part of this issue is that the automaker knew about the faulty ignition switches more than a decade before the recall campaign was ordered.
