GM and Ford Join Forces To Develop Automatic Gearboxes With 9 And 10 gears
|   Sunday, April 21, 2013
Although there is a traditional rivalry between Ford and General Motors, few people know that these two conglomerates have worked fruitfully over the last decade. And apparently they will do so from now on too. GM and Ford have announced that they would begin a new partnership that aims to develop a new generation of automatic transmissions with 9 and 10 gears.
Automatic gearboxes or those with double clutch transmission with 7 and 8 gears are already available on a variety of cars, and it looks like things will not stop here.

The specialists in automatic transmissions from ZF have announced that work on the new speed gearboxes. Most recently the groups Ford and General Motors announced that they will jointly develop an automatic gearbox with 9 and one with 10 gears. This is not the first collaboration between Ford and GM in the transmission sector, the two groups having jointly produced an automatic gearbox with 6 speeds.
The efforts of the two builders will focus on new transmission technologies that have the sole purpose of improving the consumption and emission values. The two transmissions will be used in future cars, SUVs and pick-ups manufactured by GM and Ford.

The American engineers will accommodate the two transmissions to be used on vehicles with front wheel drive and rear powered vehicles. For vehicles with the rear propulsion, the 9 or 10 speed transmissions will help improve the dynamic performances.

Thanks to the signing of this partnership, General Motors and Ford will reduce the costs of design, development, testing and distributing the new automatic gearbox. The investments will be much lower and the technological departments of both companies will be able to share progress in the field.

As mentioned at the beginning of the article, Ford and GM are not at the first collaboration of this kind. In the past decade there have been such joint investments, the last of them aiming an automatic transmission with 6 steps, for models with front wheel drive. The collaboration of the two engineering departments was a success, both companies managed to sell no less than 8 million of these transmissions across the entire world.

"Engineering teams from GM and Ford have already started initial design work on these new transmissions," said Jim Lanzon, GM vice president of global transmission engineering. "We expect these new transmissions to raise the standard of technology, performance and quality for our customers while helping drive fuel economy improvements into both companies' future product portfolios."

"This agreement provides tremendous benefits for both companies, and it will pay big dividends for our customers and shareholders," continued Lanzon. "By jointly sharing the development of these two new families of transmissions, both GM and Ford will be able to more efficiently use our respective manpower resources to develop additional future advanced transmissions and bring them to market faster than if we worked alone."

Ford used the transmission unit on American models like the Fusion, Edge, Escape and Explorer. At the same time, General Motors has found a place for it in the Chevrolet range, on e units like the Malibu, Traverse, Equinox and Cruze. As in the case of the transmissions, the new automatic gearbox with 9 and 10 gears will be produced by each manufacturer in their plants.
