Getting to Know BMW's M235i up close and Personal
|   Tuesday, January 21, 2014
BMW has replaced its old 1 Series Coupe, with a more potent variant based on a similar drive train. The 3 Series Coupe is based on the same platform, although it is a bit shorter than its predecessor, even though they weigh the same. Their M235i is a new addition and we were lucky enough to take it for a test drive around track and street conditions.

Powered by a straight six cylindered, turbo charged 3.0 liter petrol engine displacing 322 BHP, mated to an automated eight speed paddle shifter, this vehicle is available in six speed manual options too.
It is recommended for precision driving and handling prowess as BMW made sure this vehicle is capable of maximum performance on asphalt. Design cues have been lifted off the 2 Series Coupe, as side lines, body panels and similar architectural patterns are quite clearly seen.

It is an elegant yet subtle looking vehicle, designed to provide better grip and balance over bumpy terrains. Recalibrated damper and suspension settings are in place, while this vehicle is based on a new chassis, providing an easier ride to passengers. Considering final fit and finish, this vehicle is capable of cruising for long durations. BMW has offered various drive modes for specific use, while ride height and other basic components are modified accordingly.

Steering performance could have been better as this vehicle feels large on its front end. On track conditions, the M235i is capable of accelerating and slowing down effortlessly, although corner performance could have been better, considering BMW's prowess with performance like Coupes. Mid level torque displacement is high, with 3,000 – 7,500 RPM being cruise worthy. Throttle response is quite high, which calls for decent levels of performance, every time the pedal is floored.

Braking induces confidence into the driver as this vehicle starts to slow down every time the brake lever is pushed. Cabin refinement is quite BMW like, as interior noise and vibrations are hardly felt. Gear shifting is quite smooth, while general body balance is high. Priced at £35,795, his vehicle offers serious value for money.

If you are on a look out for decent fuel efficiency on a powerful machine, with decent comfort level and refinement, this is your best bet. BMW is claiming a top speed of 155 MPH, while fuel economy is listed at 37.2 MPG; with CO2 emission at 176 g/km. weighing in an average 1470 kg this vehicle offers ample space for a comfortable drive. We could however do with minor weight cuts periodically, as it affects handling capabilities.

This vehicle is best suited for urban use, owing to its small turning radius and size. BMW is offering this vehicle initially in Europe, after which it could be sold across other major markets too. We have not been made aware of future plans, although we expect formal announcements regarding mass sales soon. We will keep you updated about latest news from BMW regarding the M235i. Come back soon for more news and drive test reviews.
