Germany Opened First Hydrogen Refueling Point On Autobahn
|   Wednesday, June 17, 2015
Germany is still a step ahead of Europe and anticipating the development of hydrogen fuel cell technology that will replace the batteries on electric cars it announces the opening of the first hydrogen charging point located on the country's highways. Germany already benefits from another 19 charging points, but they are found in cities or airports.

The opening of the Total fuel supply took place in Geiselwind, located on the A3 motorway linking Germany from east to west and which passes near major cities for the German economy such as Passau, Regensburg, Nuremberg, Frankfurt, Cologne and Duisburg .
The charging point is one of 50 which will be partially financed by the German government in 2015, through the National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP). Costs relating to the charging point's development were about one million euro.

One of the parts that have invested in the program of hydrogen fuel supply development centers is Daimler, the company which includes the Mercedes-Benz brand. So, those at Daimler said the development of a viable charging network is the key for a successful introduction of this type of car on the German market in particular and the European one in general.

Linde is another company involved in the development of hydrogen refueling points. Moreover, Linde stands out by the fact that it holds in Vienna the first production plant for a reduced series of hydrogen charging points. So far, Linde has installed 90 such charging stations in 15 different countries.

The only series model powered from hydrogen cells found at this time close to market launch is the Toyota Mirai model introduced at the end of last year in the Motor Show in Los Angeles. The model will be available in Europe from September 2015 and will cost 60,000 euro. From this amount existing national bonuses for electric cars will be deducted.

According to official data sheet, the Mirai's tanks is filled in 3-5 minutes, and offers a pure electric range of about 500 kilometers. Thus, a full tank of hydrogen costs about 45 euro, but the price of fuel will decline over time along with lower hydrogen production costs for the charging stations.

In an electric car which operates using hydrogen fuel cells, the hydrogen in the tank is converted into electricity and pure water by a complex chemical reaction that takes place in the presence of oxygen and an additional oxidizing agent in a special room only millimeters large.

As part of the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) Daimler, Linde and Total have taken a serious step towards the expansion of Germany's hydrogen infrastructure.
"Networking the national H2 infrastructure is the key to success for the market introduction of electric vehicles with fuel cells. Only then can they be a ‘real' alternative for customers. That's why we are not only actively investing in the development of the next generation of vehicles, but we are the only car manufacturer to invest in the development of a nationwide network of filling stations in Germany" says Prof. Dr Herbert Kohler, Group Research Vice President and Chief Environmental Officer at Daimler.
