Geneva Motor Show 2014: Renault Twingo And Its New Generation
|   Wednesday, February 26, 2014
Two decades after the revolution in the small car segment with the first-generation Twingo, Renault is launching a new design model. The brand's engineers and designers started from a simple sheet of paper and drew inspiration from the original Twingo and Renault 5 models. The result is a new model, innovative and agile, and fun to drive.

The new Renault Twingo was created in collaboration with Daimler, a project started in 2010. The German manufacturer will soon launch its own version of the Smart city, two-and four places: the new Smart ForTwo and ForFour.

The new Renault Twingo has the engine placed in the back now, which is a plus for a small city car that frees up space in the front and significantly improves turning radius. The new Twingo boasts unbeatable maneuverability, especially in residential areas. Now it can park with just a few turns of the wheel.

"New Renault Twingo was inspired not only by the original Twingo but also by the Renault 5. It is a modern take on the city car genre with the accent on innovation in terms of its lines and architecture. New Twingo is a fun, playful and vibrant city car" said Laurens van den Acker, Head of Industrial Design.

Combined with the use of a smaller block and wheel positioning in the extremities, the rear placing of the engine frees up more space in the cabin. The new Twingo has such a wheelbase and interior space which are generally found in the upper segment models.

Created after the Twin-Z and Twin-Run concepts, presented in 2013, the new Renault Twingo has a strong personality. It comes with a range of vibrant colors and details inspired by the Renault 5. Specifically, Renault stated that the "rear screen and its prominent shoulders ... are redolent of the rear-engined Renault 5 Turbo that proved so popular with the public in its day."

Developed in parallel with the Smart ForFour, the new Renault Twingo keeps some retro elements found on the Twin'Run concept.

However, the new Twingo keeps in line with tradition and retains a frontal design which clearly indicates its belonging in the Renault range. At the same time, a strong sense of modernism is offered by the LED daytime running lights.

The back is trying to remove confusion with the Fiat 500. The spoiler is made in a way that gives the impression it integrates an air extractor, while the tailgate seems to be apparently entirely made of glass.

In addition to the idea of a cute appearance, it offers a wide range of attractive colors (light blue, white, yellow and red), and those who want to customize their car can call upon a series of stickers. The offer is not missing a retractable textile pavilion and swinging rear windows.

The five-door architecture of the new model city - a first in its history - makes it even more versatile. The new Twingo takes some key details from big brother, Clio: the profile, hidden door handles and personality thanks to the colors and interior customization options.
