Geneva 2014: Volkswagen To Launch The Golf GTE, A Sports Plug-In Hybrid
|   Wednesday, February 26, 2014
Volkswagen will premiere at the Geneva Motor Show the Golf plug-in hybrid. The Golf GTE plug-in hybrid is a system that offers 200 hp but consumes on average just 1.8 liters per 100 km.

Auto hybrids symbolized responsibility, civic duty apart, and a minimum of self control since the beginning of the century, when the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight were launched on the market. And now Volkswagen extends the Golf range with a hybrid version of the plug-in.
The Volkswagen Golf GTE is the second eco member of the compact range belonging to the Wolfsburg car manufacturer. The model will be launched at the Geneva Motor Show with the electric only e-Golf.
As opposed to it, the GTE Golf is a plug-in hybrid, which takes elements which are normally equipped on the Golf GTI and GTD. The name Golf GTE is in line with the GTD and GTI abbreviations - two iconic sports models of the range Golf.

The propulsion system consists of a turbocharged 1.4-liter TSI petrol, which makes 110 kW/148 hp plus an electric motor making 75 kW/100 hp. By working together the two engines offer 150 kW/200 hp. The real special feature of this model is its maximum torque figure of 350 Nm, superior to all other equivalent models in the segment.

In electric mode, the Volkswagen Golf GTE can reach a maximum speed of 130 km / h, while using the hybrid system the vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 100 km in a time of 7.6 seconds and a top speed of 217 km / h. By using only electricity, the Golf GTE has a range of 50 km.

A fully charged battery lasts for three hours and a half. Total autonomy of the Golf GTE is another strong point: 940 km with a fully charged 8.8 kWh battery and a tank full of gasoline. Battery capacity is 8.8 kWh, the unit is liquid cooled, and uses lithium-ion technology. The battery makes up only 8 percent of the car's total mass.

As a plug-in hybrid, the Golf GTE has an average consumption of just 1.8 liters / 100 km and an emissions equivalent of just 35 g / km. Real-life fuel consumption can vary wildly, depending on the level of charge and the distance traveled between charges.

The new Volkswagen Golf GTE looks basically the same as a normal Golf, except for the frontal part which takes over the details from e-Golf and the GTI. The vehicle comes standard with radio Composition Media and a 6.5 inch screen or optional navigation system, Discover Pro.

Compared to a standard Golf, the derivative Golf GTE has some additional features typical for plug-in hybrid models. Thus, there is an autonomy monitoring system, an energy plus statistics about emissions, and an "e-manager". The optional nav system has a "360 degree" driving range feature through which customers can download a free application for remote access to the various functions of the car.

The new Volkswagen Golf GTE plug-in hybrid will be presented to the public at the Geneva Motor Show (6-16 March 2014).
