Geneva 2014: Mazda Hazumi, The Sub-Compact Vehicle Concept
|   Sunday, March 02, 2014
Mazda has chosen the Geneva Motor Show to unveil the Hazumi concept that anticipates the next generation of the Mazda2 small class.
To announce future series designs, Mazda has been known to use its concept cars. For example, the Minagi concept that debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in 2011 previewed the CX-5 compact crossover. Furthermore, the Takeri concept displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show the same year was the foundation of thel Mazda 6 midsize sedan.

According to the Japanese automaker "The name HAZUMI is a Japanese word meaning to 'bound or spring up.' Chosen to convey the image of an untamed animal leaping, it is particularly fitting for a small car designed to look as if it is literally bursting with energy. Refusing to compromise on any of Mazda's vehicle engineering principles, the Mazda HAZUMI expresses the ideal form of the company's next-generation subcompact car."

Teasers published give grounds for assuming very little from the prototype design. The few details visible indicate however a Kodo-influenced exterior; Mazda Hazumi is basically a copy of the new Mazda3 on a smaller scale.

The Hazumi new model is just the first in a series of many other premieres prepared for 2014 and 2015, including the next-generation MX-5 roadster.

The series model will debut this fall in Paris, and will arrive in showrooms by the end of the year.
Mazda2 embraced the Kodo design language with its new generation. The model represents the next step in the Kodo design ideas, the one responsible for models like the Mazda 6, CX-5 and Mazda 3. The first concept, which anticipated the Kodo design language (Soul of the Movement) was introduced by Mazda in 2010. The first bearer of the Kodo design language was the Shinari concept.

According to industry rumors, Mazda2 will have a crossover version that will be released after the next generation hatchback debuts.

The model will abandon the old platform and turn to SKYACTIV. It will thus receive a reduced wheelbase and track gauge version of the Mazda CX-5 platform. This way, the CX-5 will be present with mostly with its spirit, given the drastic changes implemented to accommodate a small class model with a compact SUV platform. The new generation of the Mazda 2 is expected to follow the international trends in the field.

With the Hazumi concept, Mazda brings at Geneva the new Skyactiv-D 1.5 engine, a diesel which complies with the Euro 6 rules, and is expected to arrive under the hood of the new Mazda 2 and power the Mazda 3 too.

For now, information on this unit is limited, but we expect a significant reduction in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption compared to current Mazda diesel with the same displacement.

Regarding the future production version of the Mazda 2, no launch schedule or specifications, or pricing, were announced. Mazda 2 competes with the Chevrolet Sonic, Fiat 500, Ford Fiesta and Toyota Yaris.

Last year, Toyota signed an agreement with Mazda to obtain 50,000 annual Mazda 2 units. These cars will replace the Toyota Yaris range in North America. The cars will be built at the Salamanca plant, Mexico.
