General Motors Showcase GMC Canyon at Detroit this Week
|   Friday, January 17, 2014
General Motors has just revealed their latest GMC Canyon pickup truck at the Detroit Motor Show this week. Its sister vehicle – the Chevrolet Colorado - was showcased at the Los Angeles Motor Show back in 2013, although both vehicles are placed different price segments. Mid size truck segment in America will always remain, while new players are needed to spice up the stagnant market.

General Motors stopped producing Ford's Ranger last year, while Nissan and Toyota killed the Frontier and Tacoma respectively.
General Motors is currently the largest player in this segment. Hence, they are trying to come up with various options to woo customers. Base variant of the GMC Canyon is powered by a 2.5 liter inline 4 cylindered petrol engine displacing 193 BHP, with 184 ft lb of torque, while this setup is mated to an optional six speed manual transmission system.

A high end 3.6 liter V6 engine displacing 306 BHP along with 270 ft lb of torque is available with a six speed automatic transmission, although they plan on coming up with a 2.8 liter in-line turbo diesel engine. Their current four wheel drive train based vehicles lack a centre differential, while their latest Auto Trac technology automatically deploys the front axle if a rear wheel slip is spotted.

Like the Colorado, Ford is offering three variants of the Canyon with different cab lengths. You could either opt for a six foot bed or a five foot one, while the Canyon is also capable of hauling an eight foot long cab. All of these beds can haul up to 2039 kg, while a minimum of 1789 kg is possible on every variant. GMC Canyon shares various external details with the Colorado, including the chassis and other components.

As a result Ford is also charging a premium price, to compete with Chevy. Aggressive external modifications have been done to give it a masculine appeal, although major changes made on this vehicle, include its head lamps, larger grille and C shaped Daytime Running Lights. Standard 17 inch rims are provided, although larger tires could be added on special request.

An All Terrain Package is also on offer, which includes minor technical, mechanical, interior and visual upgrades, including a styling kit. Custom tuned suspension and damper settings are provided to navigate through various terrains, while different tire options allow on and off road travel. A list of electronic components have been added to give the GMC Canyon a modern feel and this list includes stability control, powered driver's seat and parking cameras.

Wi-Fi hotspot, USB, Bluetooth, Satellite Navigation and an eight inch touch screen are available as standard, although these are common features on every semi truck in America. Luxury trim levels depend upon your budget; while factory fitted customization options are also available. Pricing is of primary importance in this market; therefore General Motors need to tread carefully. We could be looking at successful sales figures if they manage to get it right. Stay tuned to find out more about the GMC Canyon.
