Future Toyota Supra Will Debut In 2017 With BMW Engine
|   Friday, July 29, 2016
For some time Toyota and BMW have been working on new sports models that will be created on a common platform. The Bavarians will launch a dynamic Roadster which will replace the current Z4 and will be most likely called BMW Z5, while Toyota will revive the legendary Supra.

The future Toyota Supra will compete with the new Honda NSX and Nissan GT-R. Because the NSX is a hybrid, and the future Nissan GT-R will have a hybrid powertrain which will combine a V6 Twin Turbo engine displacing 3.
liters with electric motors, the new Toyota Supra will also be a super hybrid car. This was even confirmed by Tetsuya Tada!

According to some sources, the upcoming Supra could appear as early as 2017 and it will adapt a hybrid drive combined with a BMW propeller. Because the previous generation Supra was equipped with the legendary propeller 2JZ-GTE with a displacement of 3.0 liters, 6 in-line cylinders, and two turbo-compressors, the future Supra could take over from the range of the German manufacturer a similar propellant with a displacement of 3.0-liter, also with 6 in-line cylinders and two turbo-compressors, which will work in tandem with the Toyota hybrid drive.

It is a logical step because the people at Toyota do not have a similar powertrain and its development from scratch would be too expensive. Remember that the Toyota GT86, which was created in collaboration with those of Subaru, was equipped with a boxer powertrain from Subaru. The future Toyota Supra will be in the same situation but is not necessarily a bad thing, because the tradition of the Twin Turbo 6 in-line cylinder thrusters with a displacement of 3.0 liters will be preserved.

Another aspect under discussion is related to how traction will be achieved.
The previous generations of Toyota Supra had a rear-wheel drive. Therefore, it would be very nice if the future Toyota Supra keeps this tradition. But it might be that those from Toyota will transfer onto the next Supra the experience of Le Mans due to the TS050 hybrid prototype.

This way, this model could receive electric motors which will move the front axle, while the rear axle will be guided by the internal combustion engine from BMW. In this case it will be a movement against tradition, but only with four-wheel drive can the future Toyota Supra have any chance against rivals.

According to the same sources, the upcoming Toyota Supra could receive a new transmission, dual clutch, developed exclusively for this model. The design of the future Supra will be inspired from the Toyota FT-1 concept, the latter in turn, being inspired from the fourth, and the most famous Toyota Supra generation.

It also announces a weight of around 1,400 kg, which could only be possible by extensive use of aluminum and carbon fiber.
"The one thing we're clear on now is that a platform for both companies can work," said BMW board member Ian Robertson in an interview for Autocar, "The cars in themselves don't actually need to be positioned the same. The platform can spawn two positionings. The concept works, the platform can deliver and now we have two proud sets of engineers – one group German, one group Japanese – who are each fighting and arguing for the car they want."
