Future Mercedes-Benz S-Class Facelift To Introduce New 6-Cylinder Engines And 48-Volt Electrical System!

Even if it is one of the car manufacturers that invest heavily in electric and hybrid propulsion, Mercedes does not forget its internal combustion engines. Investments in this area reach billions of euros and the fruits can be harvested early next year, when Mercedes is set to replace current engines with completely new units.

The structure of future powertrains will involve cylinders with a capacity of 0.5 liters. There will be engines with four, six and eight cylinders, and the most important novelty is that the six-cylinder unit will be in-line, not in V, as we are used to see on Mercedes units so far.
Basically, the manufacturer from the Stuttgart takes after the footsteps of BMW rival, which has all six-cylinder engines in-line.

The four-cylinder engines have already begun to take their place in the model range. The best example is a diesel unit with a displacement of 2.0 liters, which replaced the 2.2 liters engine. It is lighter and more compact, built from aluminum.
In addition, there are benefits from a completely new technology: a small electric motor based on the belt, rated at 48V, which replaces the traditional alternator. It helps restart the engine when using the start-stop system.

The engine can help in demanding situations and recover energy more efficiently. It will also help maintain a constant speed, turning off the engine completely. The new four-cylinder engine will deliver 134 horsepower per liter, which makes them capable of reaching even up to 268 horsepower.

The in-line six-cylinder engines will have a displacement of 3.0 liters. Just like BMW rivals. It will benefit from an electric compressor and an integrated generator. The unit develops 308 horsepower and will be the most powerful 3.0 liter diesel aggregate produced by Mercedes.
This technology permits the pressure supplementation at a low speed in order for such an electric compressor to reach speeds up to 70,000 rpm in just 300 milliseconds.

In the case of the petrol engines with six cylinders Mercedes opted for a “mild hybrid” architecture. The electric motor, which acts as a generator, is arranged between the internal combustion engine and the transmission.
Mercedes claims that this electric motor can assist with 20 horsepower and even provide 220 Nm of torque more. The Germans boast that such a unit offers the performances of one eight-cylinder engine. Also, Mercedes says to expect a maximum power of 408 hp and 500 Nm torque for such an engine.

The new eight-cylinder engines are actually some versions of the unit with a displacement of 4.7 liters. Of course, the V8 configuration will be preserved. This engine will deliver 476 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque, but will be 10% more efficient compared to current drive, which offers 455 hp. The improved efficiency is due to the disconnection system of four out of the eight cylinders via variable valve timing system, CAMTRONIC, which closes the valves of four cylinders. In this case, the novelties introduced by Mercedes would be a smaller displacement and cylinder deactivation function, able to stop four of them.

The six- and eight-cylinder engines are expected to emerge next summer on the Mercedes S-Class facelift.
