Future BMW 7 Series Flagship To Get A 200 Kg Lighter Platform
|   Tuesday, August 12, 2014
The BMW 7 Series is set to get a new generation in 2015, and it will be based on a new platform called "35up". Because of this, the mass of the 740i version will be reduced by about 200 kg.

The BMW 7 Series will get a new generation in 2015, which is scheduled to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The German model will be equipped with a completely new platform called "35up" which is made using lightweight materials that provide high strength: aluminum, magnesium, high-strength steel, and carbon fiber reinforced plastic.

1,915 kg is the weight of the BMW 730d, the entry level 7 Series model.
Due to new platforms and other improvements in the bodywork, the model will be about 200 kg lighter than the current generation. Another novelty in the 7 Series range will be the introduction of the second version with increased wheelbase, a similar move to what rivals from Mercedes-Benz did in the case of the S-Class, a model offered with three different wheelbases.

The new 7 Series modular platform will be introduced later in the 5 Series and 6 Series ranges, with the successors for the current generation models. Currently, part of the modular platform is already used by 3 Series and 4 Series, but we are just talking about the format area which includes the engine compartment. The future suspension of 7 Series will have many aluminum components and will have a double wishbone configuration for the front axle and a multilink one in the rear with pneumatic components.

Regarding the engine range, the 7 Series will benefit from the four cylinders in line engines, according to sources from the German mark. Units with six, eight, and 12 cylinders will not be missed in the offer, being expected to bring significant updates to existing powertrain. Transmission range will receive a nine-speed automatic unit instead of the current eight-speed unit, and rear-wheel drive configurations plus four-wheel drive will be available. The hybrid system offer in the 7 Series range will receive its own improvements in order to increase efficiency.

Speaking about the new 730d, BMW boss Norbert Reithofer said recently: "It will set a new standard in its class in terms of weight saving."
Engineers say that the processes developed for the i3 and i8 were adopted on the new BMW flagship and the result was to shave up to 200 kg off the weight of its predecessor. This should ensure that the successor to the lightest models of the current 7 series, the 740i, will weigh 1650 kg, or less than the current 535i model.

Prototypes were seen testing and show that the new 7 Series retains similar dimensions to those of the current model released back in 2008. Just like its predecessor, the car will be built in standard and long wheelbase forms, with plans being made for an extra-long-wheelbase model.

BMW also wants to create a new M7 or M750 M Performance version for the luxury performance market.
