From Rolls Royce, With Love
|   Wednesday, February 20, 2013
The British car maker loves to keep the world in suspense. How else can you explain the teasing images released ahead of the 2013 Geneva Auto Show for the 2014 Rolls Royce Wraith? The show will start off on March 5, and until then we can enjoy a few shots of the Wraith's interior.

Now, if we take these pictures and combine them with previous spyshots and teasers, we can see that the Wraith comes mighty close to being the eagerly awaited Ghost coupe; almost everyone in the industry thinks so.
Judging from profile and the prototype spotted in tests during the past months, that supposition is almost a conclusion.

In a departure from the boxy profile of the current Phantom Coupe, which in turn is based on the sedan version, the Wraith receives a fastback look that is both very sporting and sleek. Rolls-Royce has already confirmed this will be the fastest and most powerful model to be launched under its name.

In charge of making that promise coming true will be a twin-turbo V12 engine displacing 6.6 liters, which will be tuned to deliver in excess of 600 horsepower. The company says the output is "more than ample" and we tend to agree with that statement. Besides the extra power, the new model will benefit from a lighter chassis, stiffened suspension, as well as improved brakes and tires.

Inside, we get the finest cabins ever to be put on a production car; nothing surprising here, since this is Rolls Royce we are talking about. Luxury and hand-craftsmanship are mixed with contemporary design elements, thus complementing the vehicle's sporting nature and dynamic poise.
Sales are expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2013. Soon after, we might get a convertible version too.

Now, if you think that the brand's current lineup is not to your liking for whatever reason, you might like to know that that someone in the company feels the same way. In an era dominated by the need to reduce cylinder count, Rolls Royce is thinking about making a car powered by a V16 engine.
According to Car Magazine, the carmaker is thinking about making a roadster with that engine. A 9 liter V16 was shown in the 2004 100EX concept, but it was just that, a concept. Now, it seems that someone wants to play with a V16 again.

Using a brand new V16 engine, the Goodwood crew would build a roadster based on the next-generation Phantom's aluminum spaceframe platform. That means 2017 is the most optimistic time of arrival since 2016 is when the next Phantom rolls out. Of course, that would happen if the rumors turn out to be true.

Likewise a rumor, Rolls Royce seems to be considering an SUV, due to the rivals from Bentley going that way. If so, it can be said with reasonable certainty that a Goodwood-made SUV will appear only if Bentley's approach is successful.

While we are enthusiastic about the Wraith's upcoming reveal at Geneva, and the prospect of controlling a V16 roadster, we are not all that thrilled regarding a Rolls Royce SUV. But that's the distant futureā€¦ for now.
