Ford S-Max To Get Intelligent Speed Limiter That Will Read Road Signs
|   Wednesday, May 06, 2015
The new generation Ford S-Max will receive the first intelligent speed limiter that was ever offered by the American manufacturer. This limiter aims to eliminate speed fines for drivers who use that system.

This system comes alongside more than 20 other technologies introduced by Ford into the S-Max range with the new generation, which include direction adaptive, integral traction system, IAWD and high beam assistant.

The intelligent speed limitation launched by Ford for the first time on the S-Max works by combining two existing technologies in the manufacturer's range to offer a completely new functionality.
We are talking about the classic system speed limit and a road signs reading system. The two systems can work together with the navigation system to get verified values from two sources in order to get the maximum speed allowed on a road segment.

The folks at Ford said they introduced this system to assist drivers who will meet over 35,000 fixed speed cameras in Europe in order to minimize or even eliminate speed fines for those who will be using this system. To take advantage of new technology, the driver must activate the speed limit system and to adjust it to the maximum extent permitted by that section of road. From that moment the system does not allow acceleration above a set speed threshold unless the driver presses the accelerator pedal firmly. Also, involuntary high speeds reached by driving downhill, for example, are presented to the driver by a warning sound and a visual notification on the board.

The intelligent speed limiter system allows drivers to select a maximum speed value tolerance on that road section. If the speed limit on a section of road changes and the driver is already running with a higher speed the system does not apply the brakes, but gradually reduce the acceleration to slow the vehicle and notify the driver that he is running at a speed that is over the limit allowed in the sector of the road.
The navigation system helps the intelligent speed limiter, confirming that the values recorded in the traffic signs after comparing them with the attached GPS data provided.

The new intelligent speed limit uses the video cameras from the car's equipment to read road signs and warn the driver if he is running with a speed greater than is permitted on that road.

"Drivers are not always conscious of speeding and sometimes only becoming aware they were going too fast when they receive a fine in the mail or are pulled over by law enforcement. Intelligent Speed Limiter can remove one of the stresses of driving, helping ensure customers remain within the legal speed limit" said Stefan Kappes, Ford Europe safety supervisor.

"We're not just developing cars at Ford, we're also developing technologies to make driving more convenient, safer, and ultimately help improve mobility around the world" declared Pim van dr Jagt, Ford executive technical leader.

The speed limiter operates between 32 km/h (20 mph) and 193 km/h (120 mph). Also, the speed is reduced by limiting the quantity of fuel supplied to the engine, which also makes for a smooth deceleration.
