Ford Ready to reveal the Second Generation Kuga
|   Tuesday, February 19, 2013
The second generation Ford Kuga features an increase in wheel base, interior space and practicality. The engine has been refined and the overall equipment and trim levels on the vehicle has been improved. The increase in size is a commendable move as it makes the vehicle more desirable in its segment. Although Ford has designed the Kuga to take on the American customers, the vehicle is suited for European customers as well.

The second generation Kuga features styling modifications along with chassis tuning and Ford is offering four engine options with the vehicle.
A 2.0 liter diesel engine displacing 138 BHP and 161 BHP respectively along with 1.6 liter petrol engine displacing 148 BHP and 178 BHP respectively. Ford has also installed the intelligent All Wheel Drive technology in the vehicle and the engine is mated to a six speed automatic transmission system with Power shifting functionalities.

The second generation Kuga resembles an SUV from all directions and Ford deliberately modified the vehicle's road presence as the first generation vehicle resembled a sedan. The increase in dimension brings the Kuga in the same segment as the Toyota RAV 4, Honda CR – V and the Nissan Qashqai. However, the basic drive ergonomics of the vehicle is what differentiates it from its rivals.

Despite the larger wheel base, the Ford Kuga is still the drover's SUV and the vehicle handles and steers just as efficiently as its predecessor. The engine wants to be revved hard and the vehicle begs to be pushed on to its limits. However, the suspension is quite stiff and although it may make handling easier for an SUV, comfort levels have taken a hit.

Road presence of the second generation Kuga is massive but vibrations make the journey less comfortable that its predecessor. At low speeds the ride is quite noisy and stiff and that is a major downside of the vehicle. The engine – transmission network is well connected and complements one another effortlessly. The diesel engine is quite responsive while the transmission system up-shifts perfectly to enhance power distribution.

The boot space has been increased to 456 liters and that is massive considering the storage capacity. The increase in 82 mm of cabin space also enhances leg, head and shoulder room and the seats provide decent under thigh support to make long journeys comfortable. The cabin packs in a lot of space and the driver's seat is placed high enough to lend a commanding view of the area. Even though the dimensions have been increased, the basic ergonomics of the vehicle has been kept intact and that is a major reason for the drivability of the Kuga.

Expected to be out by the end of the year, the Ford Kuga is aimed at the European, American and Chinese markets as these are the potent SUV markets at the moment. Priced at £27,045, the Kuga accelerates from 0 – 60 MPH in under 10.4 seconds while sporting a top speed of 122 MPH. Factory claimed fuel efficiency is 45.6 MPG although the on road tests have not been conducted.
