Ford Fiesta Celebrates 40 Years Of Success
|   Tuesday, July 05, 2016
In its 40 years of existence the Ford Fiesta has become one of the most popular Ford models in history, ranking third behind the Escort and F-Series pickup. Since 1976 Ford produced more than 16 million copies, the Fiesta reaching its sixth generation. It is interesting to note that only the first and sixth generations Fiesta were sold in the US.

First Generation (1976-1983)
The "Bobcat" project, which later became Fiesta, was approved for manufacture in 1972 by Henry Ford II.
With only 3.5 meters in length the Fiesta became the most compact Ford model. Disclosure of the new Ford Fiesta took place in June of 1976 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, while sales began only in September.
Fiesta was offered with engines that had a displacement of 1.0, 1.1, 1.3 and even 1.6 liters (96 hp and torque of 133 Nm), modeled on the legendary Fiesta XR2, which became a hot-hatch, able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 9.9 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 180 km / h.

Second Generation (1983-1989)
The second generation, in fact, was a consistent facelift of the first generation which largely reached the front side. Thus, elongated headlamps and higher direction indicators appeared.
For the first time Fiesta receives a 1.6-liter diesel engine taken from the Escort and in 1987 variable the CVT transmission appeared on the 1.1-liter diesel engine. The technical substrate of the XR2 version remained unchanged and the exterior was enhanced by modified bumpers and characteristic attachments on the wings.

Third Generation (1989-1997)
With the third generation, Fiesta received a completely new bodywork, available for the first time in 3 and 5 door versions. It had improved suspension and motorization, while the diesel displacement increased to 1.8 liters.
Also, there were dynamic versions like the XR2i (104 hp) and RS1800 (130 hp), the latter being capable of 201 km / h. From 1995, the third generation was produced under the name Fiesta Classic, parallel to the fourth generation.

Fourth Generation (1995-2002)
The fourth generation adopted a rounded design and a new range of Zetec-SE engines, with displacement of 1.25 and 1.4 liters. Fiesta Mk IV had a clone - Mazda 121, which was produced on the same assembly line just in smaller volumes.
In 1999 the Fiesta s underwent a major facelift, which changed its character. Based on the Fiesta Mk IV, the people at Ford have created a niche model named Puma.

Fifth Generation (2002-2008)
Fiesta Mk V grew in size and adopted a more modern design in the style of New Edge. The range of engines went without much change from the previous generation, the engines being renamed Duratec from Zetec.
In some markets the Fiesta Mk V was sold as a sedan. It also had a dynamic version, the first generation of the Fiesta ST. This has been equipped with a naturally aspirated gasoline engine with a displacement of 2.0 liters which develops 150 hp and propels the hatchback up to 208 km / h.

Sixth Generation (2008 - Today)
The current generation is already in production for 8 years and it seems that soon those of Ford will launch a new generation model. Due to the current generation, Fiesta returned to the North American market and the Fiesta ST version (182 hp) is extremely appreciated by the American public.
At this year's festival of Speed in Goodwood Ford will unveil the most dynamic Fiesta ever created – the Fiesta ST200 version.
