Ford EcoSport lacks options but makes up with boot space
|   Sunday, August 03, 2014
When you see the new Ford EcoSport, first thing that will come to your mind is blown up. It seems to be bulging all over, like a balloon filled with air. And with an extra spare wheel fixed up on 5th door of this five door car, its design can be labeled anything but conventional.

It is going to be a part of three car line up with its first unit, Kuga, already added. The third car in this lineup is going to be Edge, coming out next year. For now, lets' focus on what Ford EcoSport has and what it lacks.

Boot space is one thing that is present in abundance in the car. There is a rear sit that is 60:40 foldable. Also, spare wheel has been shifted elsewhere, so not only there is enough leg space but places to stash you luggage as well, if you plan to take it on a weekend vacation.

Engine variations, however, is something that this car needs. Presently only one five speed manual gearbox is being offered, which is really not up to the mark. However, a six speed dual clutch automatic transmission system is due next year, with an additional 1.5 liter engine variant, so there is still hope.

Presently a three cylinder turbocharged engine with a capacity of only 1 liter is provided. So it is obvious that it is not going to provide high power. Top speed is constrained to 112 miles per hour for these reasons, and time taken to reach 62 miles per hour from rest is a huge 12.7 seconds.

The engine provides 123 bhp of horsepower and 125 lb ft of torque. Another thing that can be judged from these specifications is that it has great mileage, marked at a little over 53 miles per gallon.

Priced at 15,995 GBP, it is quite competitive in the market sense. It might be appealing to those who ‘just want a car', and do not want to spend much on it. Additional specs like CO2 emission of 125 gm/km are going to be attractive to many. There are a few options on offer as well.

Some extras under Titanium X Pack are being offered for an additional 1K, and Ford believes that most of their customers are going to go for this additional package. The car is being produced at Chennai plant of Ford, to cut sown some costs.

The EcoBoost engine is a plus point for Ford, among a few lows. Built based on a B class Platform which underpins Fiesta currently, a good ground clearance can be expected. It is not an all bad kind of a car, but the negative points out number the positive ones.

It is a smooth ride, and only major road disturbances are going to affect those in front as well as rear passenger speed. And a bit of experimentation that Ford has done with its design can prove to be beneficial for them after all. Now it is just a matter of time.
