Five Tips for Selling Your Car
|   Tuesday, September 11, 2012
Selling your car is a potentially long and laborious process. Here are five ways to ensure you get maximum value for your vehicle.

1. Avoid quick-sell sites like WeBuyAnyCar.com. Though these ‘online dealers' may offer you surprisingly high sums for your used car, they chip away at the prices - sometimes considerably - when you present the vehicle to them. There's little to no way that you will get the price they actually offer online.

2. Clean it.
Inside and out, under the hood, around the boot. Make sure the car is spick and span. Fifty quid on cleaning products and a few hours' tender loving care will see your offers skyrocket. Dealers are always going to be interested in a vehicle they can put straight on their forecourt and sell straight away, and private buyers will be impressed. Think about what the buyer is looking for - door trims, pedals, wheel arches and so on. Get some wax, some carpet cleaner and get cleaning. Oh, and don't buff your dashboard - that looks tacky. Leather should be fed with proper leather cleaner, too.

3. Make sure it has a full tank of fuel and all expendables are topped up. Buyers can be swayed by the smallest things, and a full tank of petrol on the test drive is going to give them an extra reason to smile. If they know they can drive it away right away, that's an investment they're going to consider more fondly.

4. If you take your car to a dealer, look to see what kinds of part-exchange you can get. Even better, seek out something for the not inconsiderable range of new car offers available from registered dealerships – especially those of luxury brands such as Mercedes-Benz or BMW – and use the offer as further leverage to receive additional pounds on the sale price of your vehicle. While it is correct that dealerships will offer you less than you can get privately – they have to sell their vehicles and ensure a strong markup, and they're competing against private sellers, too – by carefully selecting a new vehicle for sale at that same dealership, you can quite happily increase the value of your vehicle by a few notches.

5. Get all your documents in order, and put them in a file. If it's a dealer or a private buyer, present a clean car along with carefully-filed paperwork. Buyers are sensitive to any signs that the vehicle may have, in its past, been neglected in any way, and a slapdash search around the house for relevant documents is a sure-fire way to put someone off. Buy a nice file, and order them chronologically. Put everything in that you can, and take photocopies of the lot. Receipts from work done are a must, as is a full service history with stamps from a registered dealer (preferably the same one). Seriously, having all this can add anywhere from 10 to 20 percent on to the value of your motor.

So there we have it: 5 top tips for getting the maximum value you can out of your used car. Ultimately, it's all about thinking things through from the buyer's perspective, and trying to surprise and delight them at every turn. Good luck!
