First Official Details For 2015 Volkswagen Passat
|   Thursday, June 12, 2014
As we approach the launch of the new Volkswagen Passat, more and more information about the medium segment model are coming out. An official press release from the Germans reveals details about the new Passat, and offers a series of official sketches. The first sketches announce an aggressive design and first information confirms the presence of a 240 horsepower diesel unit.

The images show a little more angular front aspect with sharp optical blocks, a grid which continues up to the headlights, and a spoiler with simple lines.
The sportiness seems to be suggested by the drawings viewed from any angle, the profile announcing even a curved line as found on a four-door coupe. But this aesthetic detail would make it unnecessary for the presence of a future descendant Passat CC. The design will be characterized by the presence of taillights with LED lights, and some front headlights that combine halogen and LEDs along with the Dynamic Light Assist assist system.

The interior will grow from a qualitative point of view, Volkswagen trying to approach as much as the premium segment as possible. Top equipment will receive a 12.3-inch touch screen, which will take the place of onboard instruments, as in the case of the Audi TT. Also, the multimedia system will be able to synchronize with tablets or smartphones through the new generation of multimedia systems, the Modular Infotainment System. A head-up display and the new generation Park Assist, which will assist in frontal parking, are also present.

Next, we have big surprises under the hood. Here, in addition to engines that we know already, ready to provide between 120 hp and 280 horsepower, the new Passat will be ready to adopt a new twin-turbo diesel engine. It will have a displacement of 2.0 liters and will be able to deliver 240 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. These figures are very close to the performance of the 3.0-liter diesel. The unit will be assisted by a DSG with seven steps and 4Motion wheel drive. Even so, it promises an average diesel consumption of only 5 liters per 100 kilometers.

Besides the new diesel, the year 2015 will bring us a hybrid version of the Passat. It may be recharged directly from the outlet and will be made up of a petrol engine, 1.4 TSI, and another electric motor of 102 hp. Total resources will amount to 204 hp and can guarantee a total electric-only range of 50 kilometers thanks to a lithium-ion battery pack. Combined autonomy will reach 965 kilometers.

From a structural point of view there will be improvements too. The new Passat will use the MQB platform, but modified to guarantee a lower weight. Intensive use of aluminum in certain areas will lead to a total weight 85 kilograms lower than the current generation. This will have influence on consumption, estimated to be 20 percent lower than today.

The official debut is scheduled for October at the Paris Motor Show in France.
