First Info On Future VW Golf 8: Takes On Technology From Experimental XL1 Model
|   Thursday, August 28, 2014
To create a performance car from an aerodynamic and technological point of view Volkswagen engineers in charge developing of the new Golf 8 will take inspiration from the solutions adopted in the case of the XL1, and apply technological ideas that today are barely present in the industry.

Although it is in showrooms for just two years, the Golf 7 is history for Volkswagen engineers and designers are already focusing heavily on developing the next generation of the German brand's best selling model.
According to the British from Autocar, citing internal VW sources, people in charge of implementing the Golf 8 project face as the main challenge adapting the aerodynamic solutions found on the XL1 model to the compact model, without affecting layout and essential characteristics.

Volkswagen XL1 is an experimental car through which the German brand tried and succeeded in demonstrating the fact that modern technology and aerodynamics can lead to insignificant fuel consumption by a car. Transformed into road car through the introduction into small series production, the Volkswagen XL1 received a hybrid system consisting of a 0.8 liter TDI with two cylinders, which develops 50 HP, and an electric motor of 30 horsepower.

The mixed average consumption of the German model, which weighs just 800 kilograms, is 0.9 liters / 100 km and has full-electric autonomy of 50 kilometers. Revealed in the spring of 2013 and based on the concept with the same name, the VW XL1 was a bet won by the Germans at a technological level, even if the price, dimensions and characteristics, are too extreme for some customers.

According to sources quoted by Autocar, the future Golf 8 will be launched in 2019 and will have average emission levels under 80 grams CO2 / km, over the entire range of engines. 3.4 liters / 100 km is the average fuel consumption of all powertrains in the Golf range in 2019, if engineers will implement the desired average emission levels.

According to officials who spoke for the British journalists, several solutions are being investigated right now. They say that there are problems in adapting the lines of the XL1 model along the length and character of Golf. Because the dimensions of the new Golf will remain the same as the current model, the lines present on the XL1 - a car that performs aerodynamically well with a reduced height and great length - will not find a direct way on the German model, but will be remodeled to fit on the profile of the new model.

Among other innovations the Golf 8 could bring on the market when it releases, we have the flywheel solution with a device that stores energy generated during braking and it can later be reused during acceleration, the introduction of engines with variable compression ratio, electrical turbines, and a system called coasting - already existing on some models of the brand – through which the engine and transmission are stopped / disconnected when the engine is not under load (at high speeds on the highway, at speeds below 10 km / h or when the car is approaching the traffic light and the driver took his foot off the accelerator).
