First Generation Volvo XC90 Phased Out After 12 years, Swedes Preparing For Second XC90 Coming
|   Thursday, July 17, 2014
The Volvo plant in Torslanda, the largest that the Swedish manufacturer has in its portfolio has finished making the last first generation XC90 unit. This car will go directly to the museum that Volvo has in Goteborg.

Launched on the market 12 years ago and going through a facelift in its mid-career market, the model is one of the longest running models available. However, a new generation of the Swedish SUV will be launched this fall at the Paris Motor Show, and the plant in Torslanda will suffer major investments to accommodate production of the new generation, which will start its production run in January 2015.

According to figures provided by Volvo, the Swedish manufacturer has produced to this day 636,143 copies of the first generation XC90. Moreover, production figures were always better than the brand's forecasts.

For example, although the brand aimed to build 50,000 XC90 units per year, the Torslanda plant saw 85,000 units in 2007 – 2008 go out of the production line, the peak years of the European automotive industry. However, the biggest market for the XC90 has always been the United States. Volvo managed to find over 35,000 customers across the ocean, during that time between 2004 and 2005 when it was the only SUV it had there.

At its official launch in 2002, the Volvo XC90 solved some interesting problems of the SUV segment and it was the first model in this class which brought a passenger protection in the event of a rollover, the curtain airbag, adjustable cushion for children, built in the second row seats or pre-tensioning seatbelt for all seven seats.

Moreover, although the model is the oldest in the line of models made by automakers in 2014, the XC90 benefited at the launch from a platform so advanced, that the Swedish model has even received this year's distinction Top Safety Pick +, granted to cars which behaves exemplary in safety tests done in the USA.

Very interesting is that the already old Volvo XC90 will continue to be produced in China, at the newly built plant in Daqing, but the name will be Volvo XC Classic and will be sold exclusively on the Chinese market.

The Volvo XC90 was launched with a range of five and six-cylinder engines. All were mounted transversely according to Volvo's powertrain concept. Back in 2004, the range saw the addition of a powerful V8 engine made of aluminum, which was mated to a six speed automatic gearbox.

"We have learnt a great deal from the first generation XC90. I am convinced that our customers will be very pleased. We have learnt a great deal about the important holistic approach for everyone in the car, when it comes to following up this success" said Dennis Nobelius, who is primarily responsible for the new XC90.

Overall, Volvo has over 23,000 employees worldwide. Volvo Cars head office, product development, marketing and administration functions are located mainly in Gothenburg, Sweden. Its HQ for China is located in Shanghai. The main car production sites are found in Gothenburg (Sweden), Ghent (Belgium) and Chengdu (China), while the engines are made in Skövde (Sweden) and Zhangjiakou (China)
