First Drive - The Renault Grand Scenic
|   Monday, August 12, 2013
Renault has upgraded the visual side of the Grand Scenic for the second time in two years and the company cannot be accused of having forgotten the MPV. However, the changes are minor and are incapable of fending off stiff market competition from the likes of vehicles such as the Kia Carens and the Citroen C4 Grand Picasso. These vehicles are the dark horses of the segment and have made their debut not long back.

The major additions to the Grand Scenic include standard 17 inch rims, gloss black grille, and modern exterior along with sharp head lamps.
All these add certain panache to the ride which gives the MPV a completed look. The infotainment measure includes a Bose stereo device complete with nine speakers. Renault has also added an advanced start / stop technology to the Grand Scenic to enhance fuel efficiency and general performance.

The vehicle is powered by a 1.6 liter dCi engine which was introduced to the lineup during the last face lift. The engine is quite, smooth and pretty refined and the rev range is quite balanced. The engine works well near the mid RPM range which makes it a potential urban ride. The vehicle is quite balanced and stable on the road however the steering column could use a little help at times.

The cabin has not received any major upgrades too and hence this undermines the general aesthetic of the Grand Scenic. Renault could really have done better with the interior. Even though the vehicle looks outdated at first, it does appeal to the senses and the introduction of various modern technologies such as satellite navigation etc. ensures that the general ride feel is completely different.

Boot space is reserved at 208 liters although it increases to a total 2063 liters with the rear seats removed. This is adequate space for people willing to live out of their trucks. The Renault Grand Scenic might be the perfect choice if you are in the mood to move loads of boxes. However, the general twitchy ride quality and underperforming steering column does reduce the general appeal of the vehicle.

Priced at £24,395, it may not be the cheapest but is within the general competitive range. However, it still is a few thousand bucks cheaper than the latest Grand C Max or the Kia Carens. Even though this vehicle lacks a seven seated interior or the comfort and refinement of a Ford, the Renault Grand Scenic offers sufficient functionalities for the price. This is a very practical vehicle with good value for money and doubles efficiently as a car for family transport.

Interior space is high while running costs are low. These factors work well to make the Grand Scenic one of the most desirable SUVs in the class. Renault claims that the fuel efficiency is close to 64.2 MPG although these figures are not quite possible on real road conditions. The six speed transmission system works well with the engine and the front wheel drive train is an added incentive.
