First Drive - The Porsche 911 GT3
|   Sunday, August 11, 2013
The Porsche 911 GT3 has been a benchmark product ever since its launch back in 1999. This is a track centric vehicle with the practicality of being used for travelling daily. Even though the chassis is not large which makes the cabin quite crammed although the vehicle is still regarded as one of the best performing vehicles of the era.

The 911 chassis is one of the most popular in the history of automobiles and these vehicles are the nemesis of performance vehicles within a budget.
The GT3 however is the icing on the cake. This is the most expensive vehicle in the entire 911 series and is also the latest to make an official debut into the lineup. The 991 GT3 is a much awaited vehicle in the lineup, especially since Porsche claims that this is a supped up version of the 911.

Tests on the fifth generation GT3 has already begun and it has been revealed that the vehicle draws power from a 3.8 liter six cylindered engine along with an all electric drive train. The steering column and transmission has also been heavily modified and this gives the 911 a refined edge over its competitors. The Porsche 911 is one of the best handlers on the road today and the GT3 can safely be certified as the best among the lot.

The dual clutch seven-speed PDK transmission system is well adjusted to the general engine dynamics and gives the vehicle a complete feel. The 3.8 liter engine block has been inspired from the high performance Carrera lineup and displaces 469 BHP along with 440 ft lbs of torque. The figures are heart racing and these figures make this vehicle the staunch performer that it is.

Acceleration from 0 – 60 MPH is possible just under 3.5 seconds while this car feels comfortable till the 9000 RPM mark. Decent performance can be expected within 3500 – 4000 RPM while the deep engine growl can be looked up to. The 911 GT3 belongs to a class of environment friendly and economic super cars and Porsche has maintained its heritage since the early days.

Considerable technological enhancements have been made to the platform to keep it up to date with the era and all of these enhancements have worked up their part quite well. The traction control, ride dynamics, comfort, general suspension and adapter settings etc. work well with the car while the throttle is well adjusted which gives the car a complete feel. Once the pedal is floored, the car rushes forward and this is exactly when you feel the adrenaline rushing through the body.

The transmission has been updated and this reduces the shifting time. Refinement was never an issue with Porsche although the class has been taken a few notches higher. Driving this car is the ultimate thrill and hence the best part about the review was the actual driving. This may be a track centric vehicle but has the necessary qualifications which enable it to be driven around the city as well as on freeways.
