First Drive Review: The 2014 Corvette Stingray
|   Friday, August 16, 2013
The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray has finally made it across showrooms and it is time for a detailed analysis of the vehicle. For all of you who planned on buying a top end performance car, the Stingray is here. The seventh generation Corvette promises to deliver on the aspects of performance and style while the Z51 performance package further enhances the sporty edge of the machine.

The Corvette Stingray reaches 0 – 60 MPH in a nerve wracking 3.
seconds while the built in Race mode makes the power delivery linear. Traction control is quite high while the car feels smooth and well balanced on asphalt. The vehicle is powered by the all new LT1 V8 engine block and the power delivery is quite like the LS3, although the grunt produced is more potent in this one.

The engine is mated to a seven speed manual transmission system and just like with Porsche, the seven gears make this car a commuter. The urge to rocket past the top speed is missing although the Stingray is now a more potent highway cruiser. The car is slick nonetheless and stands out in the crowd. The first six gears are well placed, followed by quite a tall seventh gear.

The car is quite tractable on normal road conditions although it does require better grip on wet and lose surfaces. However, this car is quite different from its predecessors when it comes to close quarter driving. Bring the Stingray on a closer track and the car still holds its pinch. The limited slip differential is quite sturdy while the tire grips hard. The differential rotates 83 times per second who makes it quite fast and smooth.

Even if you take the Corvette Stingray on tight mountain roads, the car will feel completely at home, unlike its predecessors which usually lose their tail on high speed driving. Chevrolet has finally got the balance right and the Stingray boasts an equal mix of power, performance and handling. The stiff chassis of the Stingray may seem difficult to deal with initially but once the car is taken on track, it all begins to make sense.

The magneto rheological dampers fitted on the car makes the ride comfortable even over broken roads while the presence of under steer is evident on sharp corners. Over steer may help in some areas although in general it is quite a disadvantage. Under steer on the other hand makes the driver cautious while driving. Therefore, to sum it up, the 2014 Corvette Stingray is a monster and the V8 engine block along with the seven speed transmission system is capable of some serious performance.

Chevrolet has finally managed to hit off with some high performance and the Corvette Stingray is the perfect vehicle to experiment on. The previous generation Corvettes were known to sport quite low ground clearance although the Stingray changes the fact. If you are planning to get your hands on a supercar but do not know what to go for, Chevrolet has the perfect option lined up.
