Fiat 124 Spider - Mazda MX-5's Italian Brother Presented
|   Thursday, December 31, 2015
The Fiat 124 Spider is officially presented Fiat and it uses the Mazda MX-5 platform!
In the mid-60s Fiat launched a convertible with four seats and an elegant silhouette. In 2016, the 124 Spider convertible celebrates 50 years of existence, and on this occasion the Italians wanted to resuscitate it. However, to create a niche model alone is very difficult. This was shown us by those from Toyota and Subaru, which designed the twin models Toyota GT86 (Scion FR-S) and Subaru BRZ.

Although initially it was planned to launch the Alfa Romeo Spider on the platform of the MX-5 model, those from Fiat have decided to take the project in their hands.
In this way, the Fiat 124 Spider model was reborn, thanks to the brilliant technical platform of the Mazda MX-5. The Fiat 124 Spider was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the US market being one of the most important for this model.

The design of the new convertible has been done in the design center in Turin, emulating the old 124 Spider 1966.
Even though similarities with the model appeared about 50 years ago are evident through the optical blocks shape, mangle, muscular line of the back wings, starting from the handle zone, the logo that is placed directly above the boot lid, this car has and a strong dose of American brutality.

For example, in some angles, especially the rear, the new Fiat 124 Spider hints at a Dodge Viper (Dodge entering the composition of the Fiat Chrysler alliance). Perhaps the designers intentionally wanted to instill this American spirit to the new model.

In the end though, it is just a MX-5 with body panels changed, just look at the direction indicators, the front wings, handles doors, mirrors, windshield frame, the protective devices after chairs and folding roof. The silhouette has become wider by about 140 mm, which has helped increase total weight by 46 kg for the version with manual transmission and 43 kg for the version with automatic gearbox.

By way of motorization, the engine of the new 124 Spider is different from the 1.5 and 2.0-liter naturally aspirated units found under the hood of the Mazda MX-5. The Italians opted for their own unit, a 1.4-liter with a 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine that develops 160 hp and a torque of 250 Nm. Even if it is a bit heavier, the 50 Nm higher torque will help show a similar dynamic with the 2.0-liter version of the MX-5 model.

If the exterior design still seems an Italian creation, the interior components are taken largely from Mazda, including the infotainment system, which was named Fiat Connect 7.0.

The commercial debut of the new Fiat 124 Spider will take place in the summer of 2016, according to the agreement between the two partners. The first 124 units of Fiat 124 Spider will be sold in the United States in a limited edition, called Prima Edizione Lusso. This may be found in a related variation on the European market. Until then, we know that the variants in the US have a numbered plaque on board and are offered only in the exclusive color Azzurro Italia (blue) and leather interior, along with a series of ornaments and special features included in the package.
