Fiat 124 Officially Confirmed As Name Of The Italian Mazda MX-5 Version
|   Sunday, March 22, 2015
Fiat 124 will be the name of the Italian's version of the Mazda MX-5, announce British from Autocar, after an interview at Geneva Motor Show with Sergio Marchionne, Chrysler Fiat Automobiles boss.

Marchionne has confirmed with this announcement a rumor within the company, which provides an important rule for all Alfa Romeo models: all Alfa Romeo models must be 100 percent Italian, so this roadster would not be classified into brand philosophy because it will be built in the Japanese factory in Hiroshima.
The initial understanding between the two companies provided that the Japanese model launched first in 2015, followed by an alternative version from Fiat within a period of 12 months.

Fiat 124 Spider is the name for this roadster, news about which circulated a lot after a US source announced a registration application for the name "Fiat 124" and "Fiat 124 Spider" at the registered trade mark office. The name 124 Spider has been first used by people from Fiat in 1966, when they launched a roadster with a central engine and rear wheel drive. Not accidentally, the Italian version of the Mazda MX-5 will have the same configuration, which would mean that Fiat would still make a return to its historical designation, as they did when they launched the modern version of the Fiat 500.

The current Mazda MX-5 generation will have a production cycle which will last about ten years, which means that the platform and the bodywork will remain almost unchanged over the next decade, and Fiat will sell its version for nine of the ten years of production. Of course, updates to the model from one year to another are not excluded, with facelifts and new engines launches in the offer. Also, turbo variants are not to be excluded, the latter option being possible even for the Italians, via Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and their dedicated Fiat Powertrain Technologies division.

In the case of the SKYACTIV-G engine from Mazda, the new range of petrol engines from the Japanese was not offered another turbo version for any unit in the portfolio.

The SKYACTIV-G engine is significantly different from the previous units because it has a high compression ratio, incompatible with the addition of a turbocharger which would be effective and which will involve serious amendments to the base platform when the time to develop a SKYACTIV-G Turbo engine comes.

The new roadster will weigh in less than 1,000kg, with "small affordable engines" available. It's most likely will use the 1.4-litre MultiAir turbo unit from the Alfa Giulietta, while the Abarth version could use the same engine pumped up to "200[hp] without issue". Besides additional power, the Abarth might get a stiffer suspension, a more aggressive style as well as bigger brakes.

The debut of the new Fiat 124 Spider is expected early next year before going on sale in the summer of 2016. Prices and detailed specs will be revealed then, but considering the predicted power buffs compared to the MX-5, a price tag close to 30,000 euro can be expected.
