Ferrari Tackles Eco Trend: Emissions Will Be Reduced 20 Percent By 2021
|   Wednesday, July 02, 2014
It's official: all V8 engines which will be launched in Ferrari's range will have turbochargers, while the V12 engines of future models will benefit from a hybrid system designed to ensure CO2 reduction; the info comes from Ferrari's head of the motor development department.

The Italians' decision is related to the European norms which affects car manufacturers with lower production volumes and will be applied in fully from 2021. The Italians want to cut CO2 emissions by 20 percent at range level, the current average being 270 grams per kilometer.

For each year from now on, Ferrari will reduce emissions by 3 percent per year, which would mean that cars manufactured and sold in 2021 will easily comply with the new rules. In the past seven years, Ferrari models CO2 emissions decreased on average by almost 40 percent.

Despite the fact that they are a subsidiary of the Fiat-Chrysler Group, Ferrari, is treated as an independent company by the European Commission because its headquarters is different from the parent company, has its technical centers and produces volume units.

Due to these limited volumes, Ferrari may negotiate with both European regulators as well as their American counterparts. What is important is not the the average value of the CO2 emission produced by Ferrari's range in 2021, but rather the decrease of said values which must be at the same level as the other car makers in Europe. We can expect other supercar manufacturers such as McLaren, Lamborghini, Pagani and Aston Martin to announce similar decisions in the coming years.

"Our average CO2 emissions are currently about 270 grams of CO2 per kilometer. We want to use all the available technologies to reduce emissions by 3 percent each year, which means approximately a 20 percent decrease by 2021," Ferrari Powertrain Director Vittorio Dini declared for Automotive News Europe.

Ferrari has already introduced its first modern turbocharged unit in its California range (California T coupe-convertible) in the form of a V8 engine displacing 3.9 liters, which provides 552 hp and emits 250 g / km of CO2, 49 grams of CO2 per kilometer less compared to its predecessor, an aspirated 4.2-liter V8 engine, rated at 483 hp, which emitted 299 g / km of CO2.

In the future, Ferrari wants to reduce the displacement of its V8 engine series and raise the level of power provided by them. In terms of the V12 engines range, the Italians will keep the aspirated configuration and add a hybrid system, as they have already done in the case of La Ferrari.

The supercar, which costs over 1 million euros, gets its power from an 800 hp normally aspirated 6.3-liter V12 and a 120 kilowatt (rated at 163 hp) electric motor.
This supercar offers a total 963 hp and emits only 330 grams of CO2 per kilometer, while the model it replaced, the Enzo, offered 660 hp and emitted 545 g / km of CO2.
