Ferrari Reveals the 458 Speciale This Week
|   Tuesday, August 27, 2013
Ferrari has just unveiled the worthy successor to the 430 Scuderia and this vehicle is known as the 458 Speciale. This vehicle was conceptualized as the 458 Italia although the plan to change the nameplate has been quite a recent decision. Ferrari plans on officially showcasing this vehicle at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2013, although the initial details had been revealed a few months back.

The 458 Speciale is powered by a small 4.5 liter V8 engine lifted off the 458 Italia although the power displacement had been increased to 597 BHP @ 9,700 RPM along with 398 ft lb of torque @6,000 RPM.
The 458 Speciale weighs approximately 1,290 kg even though the engine is powerful enough to propel the vehicle from 0 – 60 MPH within 3 seconds flat. This means that the motor generates roughly 133 BHP more than that of the 458 Italia.

The SP Speciale also speeds up to 124 MPH from a standstill within 9.1 seconds. Ferrari says that the track performance of the Speciale had been promising and further tests had to be conducted on the vehicle before it was ready to be formally inducted to the lineup. Ferrari claims that a track test proved that the 458 Speciale is 1.5 seconds faster than the Italia around the test track.

Although the fastest car around Ferrari's test track is still the LaFerrari with a lap time of 1:20 minutes, the 458 Speciale completed the track in a reputable 1:23.5 minutes. Although this vehicle has been designed keeping in mind the LaFerrari, it still has characters unique to itself. Needless to say, the Ferrari 458 Speciale is a heavily aerodynamic vehicle and borrows much of the external lines from the LaFerrari.

The Slid Slip Angle Control System installed in the vehicle is the latest addition to the vehicle, which keeps tab on the traction, speed level and other important levels on the car. This system also controls the torque generation and distribution while enhancing the general drive dynamic of the vehicle. Ferrari is also using super grip Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires on the Speciale, claiming that the advanced grip tires will help the car gain advanced acceleration equaling 1.33g.

The Speciale is a modified version of the Italia and the company is quite vocal about its expectations from this car. This is expected to set new benchmarks in the field of performance racing although it is not in the hyper car segment. Some of the rumored nameplates on the car were rumored to be Challenge Stradale, Monte Carlo or Scuderia, although Ferrari ultimately went with the Speciale nameplate.

The design work on this vehicle is mainly the work of Pininfarina along with Ferrari and as a result there is a certain edge to the design of the vehicle missing in most of its competitors. Pininfarina have designed cars for Ferrari long enough to realize what the company represents and as a result there is no room for error on the bodywork as with the performance and luxury levels.
