Ferrari 458 to launch new V8 twin-turbo
|   Friday, October 31, 2014
Ferrari will be launching its downsized new V8 powered twin-turbo destined for replacement 458 Italia marking as new start era next spring at Geneva Motor Show under the chairman of Ferrari, Sergio Marchionne. Ferrari 458 is set with new re-skin car with aluminum platform which underpins recent 458.

However, its project name given is 142M; where the 142 is the 458's project number and M refers to modified. This new supercar with two-seat is been expected to technically break through mid-engine mainstream ground for Ferrari by V8 twin-turbo features which is 3.
liter unit California based.

In China, 458 with V8 powered 4.5 liter hampering the sale suffers with high taxes. Compared to California's a bit longer stroke, new Ferrari 458 have to carefully select its stroke to ensure its over-square dimensions such that for its short stroke so at the high engine reviews to promote delivery of peak power.

For instance, with 85mm long stroke a capacity of 4.0 liter would relatively be delivered which is very much close to 86mm bore diameter. Hence, 458 outgoing engine in comparison has 94mm bore diameter and 81mm short stroke. In today's engine geometry, Ferrari 458 also needs 75mm stroke with 3.5 liter equivalent where the required power to generate is enough or not is still is a discussion point.

In the race of engine, McLaren 650S with 641bhp will be targeting new car 458 and so Ferrari might to suggest with rating 666bhp. However, in such matter, this new V8 powered engine for 3.5 liter has to develop 192bhp/L and for 4.0 liter to develop 168bhp/L. Hence, Ferrari's detection system with ion knock and 12:1 high compression ratio engine feature adjusting condition of combustion individually in eight-cylinders each is needed to achieve that target.

Ferrari might add T which denotes turbo-charging and also from previous experiences it may likely to just opt for fresh newly naming direction. The engine design of 458 is likely to be California's, but the induction system will be not the same.

However, Ferrari experimenting with one more possibility which is electrical technology powered turbo that requires electrical system of 42V is too expensive for engineers to reverse into current architecture. Moreover, the conventional set-up of twin-turbo and two turbo low-inertia units which likely allow quick throttle response also high power peak at expense of the torque.

The powertrain engineers of Ferrari's face the challenge in making of reliable match to 7-speed dual clutch Getrag 7DL750 automatic gearboxes which will give output of 650bhp_plus and 550lb/ft-plus torque employed on every models from California to LaFerrari. California's peak torque of V8 553lb/ft was set for limited box only and been delivered just for seventh gear; whereas for 6-lower gearbox it is been 400lb/ft limited.

Autocar understand Getrag box development whether it means extra gear or beefier internals are in pipeline that means it's still unclear. Styling is likely the evolutionary work and aerodynamic developments will be consisting lead changes with forcibly twin intakes surrounded with graphic centered at the front-end.
