EuroNCAP: Only 4 Stars For The BMW i3, Nissan, Ford EcoSport And VW Transporter
|   Saturday, November 30, 2013
EuroNCAP has published the results of its latest testing session. The results were not so good for the BMW i3, Ford Ecosport, Nissan Note and Volkswagen. All have received four stars.

For some, the day when the results were presented may be a day that tarnishes pride, a pride that was built over decades. For others it may mean a culmination of the work in the last period. For those with an already wounded pride, this is synonymous with the day of rehabilitation.
These results are perhaps the most controversial of this year.

11 models have been tested from a variety of categories varying from commercial vehicles to luxury sedans and electric models and there have been several disappointments, perhaps the most after a long series of successful test sessions.

The first disappointment is the BMW i3, the much praised electric model of the Germans built with a carbon fiber structure. The first production model of the BMW with zero emissions only received four stars, disappointing from the point of view of the safety systems and pedestrian protection. EuroNCAP penalized the expensive i3 on the chapters of safety systems, primarily because the car does not come with warning for coupling seat belts on the rear seats. In the official press release, BMW deliberately avoided addressing the problems raised by EuroNCAP.

The Germans do not assume the four stars awarded by EuroNCAP. Moreover, these tests are considered inferior to their own tests: "The effectiveness of all the passive safety systems in the BMW i3 was analyzed during the car's development process in numerous crash tests conducted by the BMW Group's accident research specialists and in cooperation with independent experts. As part of this process, all the accident scenarios referred to for vehicle registration processes and consumer protection tests around the world – above and beyond Euro NCAP testing – were taken into account, including an impact by another vehicle against the rear of the BMW i3 and a roll-over situation."

Euro NCAP also tested other electric models. Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe and Opel Ampera acquired each five stars. Models that have obtained the same score as the BMW i3 are the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Citroen C Zero and Peugeot iOn, and the Renault Fluence ZE.

If you look at all the models tested by EuroNCAP in 2013, we note that few cars were rated four stars. Among them, the Romanian hatchback, Dacia Sandero, received a score closed to that of the i3. Four stars were received by the Mitsubishi Mirage and Adam Opel.

The winners of this test session were the compacts. Peugeot 308 and Mazda3 both obtained five stars, with the Japanese model being slightly superior to the French model in some chapters. In the official press release, Mazda boasts that its compact model is the safest in the segment.

The Maserati Ghibli, the Italian rival with the emotional design of the BMW 5 Series, managed to get five stars, scoring big where everyone had big problems: pedestrian protection. The list of premium products tested by EuroNCAP ends with the Infiniti Q50, a replacement of the old G37 and the BMW 3 Series rival. The car has received all five stars, even if the percentages for the protection of adults and children do not jump over 90 percent.
