EuroNCAP Automatic Emergency Braking Tests: Mercedes E-Class Has Best Scores
|   Thursday, November 07, 2013
EuroNCAP published the automatic braking test results for eight models sold in Europe. The best ranked car is the Mercedes E-Class, followed by Volvo V40 and Mitsubishi Outlander.

In late September, IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), the American homologue of EuroNCAP, tested the effectiveness of collision avoidance systems, and found that many models, some with premium claims, do not prove adequate efficiency.

EuroNCAP, the European Organisation for the regulation of traffic safety has tested the automatic emergency braking (Automatic Emergency Braking, abbreviated AEB) of eight models sold on the Old Continent.

EuroNCAP has tested the response speed of the vehicles, and set a scoring system that gives between 0 and 3 points. Depending on their score, the performance can be: good, adequate and marginal. There were two types of testing: in the city and outside the city.

CITY AEB - testing the ability of the vehicle to avoid collisions at low speeds ranging between 10 and 50 km / h. The driver inside a column does not notice the car in front braking. In this case, the automatic braking system, based on a series of lasers embedded in the front panel or rearview mirror support must stop the vehicle in time to avoid a collision.

In the city automatic braking test, EuroNCAP focused on six cars. The best score was obtained by Mercedes E-Klasse (3 points), followed closely by the Volvo V40 (2.9 points) and the Mitsubishi Outlander (2.1 points). The rest of the models have failed to overcome the threshold of two points and were labeled with adequate rating.

INTER-URBAN AEB - this test is performed at speeds up to 80 km / h and includes, in addition to the automatic braking, a driver warning system. Considering the high speed of travel, the system uses radar and cameras to monitor traffic. If sudden braking is detected in front of the car, the system triggers a warning to the driver and prepares the braking system. If the person behind the wheel does not react, the system automatically performs emergency braking.

These technologies try to avoid accidents occurring at high speeds on the highway, usually happening when creating bottlenecks. Inter-Urban AEB tests involve three test scenarios:
- Closing in on a stationary vehicle with speeds between 30 and 80 km / h.
- Closing in with speeds between 30 and 80 km / h on a vehicle traveling at a slower speed.
- Following a car in front, which suddenly brakes.

EuroNCAP has put these three scenarios to the test on 5 cars, some of them tested on the AEB City category. The best result was scored by Mercedes E-Klasse (2.7 points), followed by Volvo V40 (2.6 points) and the current Volkswagen Golf 7 (2.2 points).

Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP Secretary General, said: "With the limited number of systems available and tested, we can already see real differences in their performance and expected real world benefit. However we compliment the manufacturers of the systems in today's launch, whether the system scored good, adequate or marginal, for already offering this technology onto their cars and hope that our results will help them to further develop their systems."
