ESP - The Electronic Guardian Angel's Anniversary
|   Friday, April 04, 2014
Bosch has produced 100,000,000 ESP (Electronic Stability Program) systems that have saved a lot of lives. From November 2014, the ESP will become standard equipment on all new cars registered in the EU.

The Electronic Stability Program helps maintain stability on road cars, especially when they enter curves at high speeds or are skidding, a case in which most of the times the consequences of accidents are very serious.

"In recent years, ESP has saved many lives and it is a proven thing.
Also, ESP is a basic element of the high-performance assistance functions, and autonomous driving, "stated Gerhard Steiger, Systems Division President of Bosch Chassis Control.

The German corporation developed anti-skid technology in 1995, being the first company in the world to start mass production of the system.

From the start of the series production in 1995, to date, Bosch has produced 100 million ESP systems. By 2010 they produced in total 50 million ESP systems, and in just four years the number has doubled. Gerhard Steiger said that since 2010 they have been producing more ESP systems than ABS.

After the seat belt, ESP occupies the second position as the most important security system. According to studies, ESP can prevent up to 80 percent of accidents caused by skidding.

A detailed analysis of the German database GIDAS regarding in-depth studies on traffic accidents indicates that in 2011, 540 lives were saved in Germany alone thanks to ESP. This year, 60 percent of vehicles traveling on roads in Germany were equipped with the "electronic guardian angel" and an increasing number of countries require introduction of the system for new passenger cars.

Currently, 78 percent of passenger cars and new light trucks produced in Europe are equipped with this system. Also, the system is mandatory for all cars to a maximum weight of 4.5 tons in the United States.

It is also compulsory in Australia, Israel, and in Japan, Korea, Russia and Turkey, where the regulations will come into effect in the coming years. Globally, 55 percent of passenger cars and light trucks are equipped with ESP.

Since the start of series production, Bosch constantly improved the safety system, gradually adding additional features. If the first version weighed 4.3 kilograms, the basic version of the current generation weighs only 1.6 kg. Over time, the system has become lighter, more compact and much cheaper.

Due to the new assistance systems, driving is safer and more comfortable. Bosch develops functions that automatically maintain distance from the vehicle in front, handles the car in the tightest parking spaces, and warns the driver ahead of critical situations.

In the coming years, an increasing number of larger maneuvers will become fully automated, which will allow passenger cars to enter unassisted in the garage, or to slip into traffic on the highway. All these functions have one thing in common: brakes that work without driver intervention. The ESP system puts into practice the braking commands. Therefore, additional safety and comfort functions can be easily added to passenger cars that have them already built.

The sensors that collect environmental data for the car are a decisive element of these functions.

They act as sensory organs for the car: recognize other oncoming traffic and determine their distance from the vehicle, and the speed and direction of travel of these cars. Bosch also offers a wide range of ultrasonic sensors, video, and radar, which serve this purpose.
