ESP HEV - Brake Control System For hybrid And EVs

The ESP HEV system offered by Bosch is the first brake control system in the world series produced through which the wheel brake and electric motor are coordinated without the need for additional components.

In the future, large vehicles will need electrified propulsion systems to meet the consumption limits that are becoming increasingly stringent. The effectiveness of these hybrid and electric vehicles will be largely determined by their ability to recover as much energy during braking.


The system was launched in mid 2013, in the endowment of the Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid. "Using ESP hev, all the braking maneuvers defined in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) can be fully exploited for energy recovery," said Gerhard Steiger, president of Bosch Chassis Systems Control division. "The new technology is part of our modular brake kit, with which we can put together a customized braking system for any vehicle."

For the S400 Hybrid model the ESP HEV from Bosch coordinates the braking torque via the hydraulic brake, engine braking, and electric vacuum pump control. The Braking circuit on the rear axle is disengaged from the brake pedal. Deliberately providing a bigger leave for the brake pedal, the vehicle can be braked initially only with the electric motor connected to the rear axle, generating electricity. The pedal position notifies to the system which torque is necessary for generating.

When the driver presses the brake pedal harder, it generates an additional braking torque for the hydraulic brake on the front axle so that the braking force is now applied to both axles of the vehicle. If the generator cannot provide a sufficient braking torque at the rear axle, the system uses hydraulic pumps modulators to create an additional braking pressure. Transitions are smooth and imperceptible to the driver - vehicle behavior and pedal position remain unchanged.

On top of the version described for the brake circuits with distribution on the front and rear axle, Bosch also offers a diagonal brake circuit version. The ESP HEV can be used on vehicles with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The new braking system is based on ESP Premium, the most powerful of the Bosch Generation 9 variants.

The HEV ESP is part of the kit that Bosch can configure a custom braking system for all vehicles and customer needs, taking into account factors such as vehicle size, type of propulsion, the degree of electrification and the number of support functions. While ESP HEV is the solution with regenerative braking for hybrid and electric vehicles, classic ESP continues to be the solution for conventional vehicles. There are also two alternatives with increased braking force: the conventional solution based on vacuum and iBooster.

This new braking force electromechanical amplifier does not require vacuum and in combination with ESP HEV can further enhance energy recovery, while providing a great actuation of the pedal. Plus, the iBooster is able to provide redundancy, which will be essential for future autonomous driving features.
Production kicked off at the end of 2013. In other words, Bosch has offered vehicle manufacturers a unique modular package and scalable solutions, which is particularly suitable for vehicle models that are available with different propulsion systems.
