Engine of the Year: The 1 Liter EcoBoost Engine From Ford Chosen For The Second Time
|   Friday, June 07, 2013

The Ford 1.0 liter Ecoboost was named for a second consecutive time the International Engine of year, 2013 being the year in question. But there were many categories and more winners. BMW took home the most awards.

The jury consisted of 87 automotive journalists from 35 countries. They had to give their opinion ofn a range of drive units which are currently on the market. There were several categories defined by displacement. The categories were: under one liter, between a 1.
and 1.4 liters, 1.4 liters and 1.8 liters and. Moving on we had the following categories: between 1.8 liters and 2.0 liters, 2.0 and 2.5 liters, from 2.5 liters to 3.0 liters, from 3.0 and 4.0 liters and, lastly, over 4.0 liters. Beyond these categories, there is a Green Engine Award category, for ecological models, and the supreme title "International Engine of the Year".

Last year, the final distinction was transferred to the account of Ford's 1.0 Ecoboost unit being rewarded. This year, for the second consecutive time, and the third in the history of the competition, the same 1.0 Ecoboost engine wins the supreme title.

The turbocharged unit produced by Ford in Craiova and Kolhn, received the highest score in the history of the competition, 470 points. Next ranked the Volkswagen 1.4-liter TSI engine, in the 180 hp version, which collected 408 points, while the occupant of the third position was the new 2-liter twin-turbo unit from BMW developing 245 hp; the latter entered the contest at a considerable distance (247 points).

The gasoline unit has won its own category of under a liter since its displacement is 999 cc. The jury noted the dynamic qualities of the engine and its small size. The people from Ford have shown in the past that the area occupied by the motor is comparable to that of an A4 sheet and that the motor fits in the luggage of a passenger aircraft cabin.

The engine, which integrates turbocharging tech, as well as direct fuel injection and variable valve timing in order to reduce fuel use while keeping power, also won the Best Engine Under 1.0-liter category at the annual awards hosted by the Engine Technology International magazine.

The 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine is currently being launched all over the world, the most recent being in China and India in the EcoSport, and later this year, North America will see it in the Fiesta.

"With a technology as mature as the internal combustion engine, it's very rare to achieve a true breakthrough, but that is exactly what the team accomplished with this engine," said Joe Bakaj, Ford's vice-president of powertrain engineering, in a statement. "You have to drive it to believe a small three-cylinder engine can deliver such performance and fuel economy."

In Europe, the small engine is available in the Focus, B-Max, Fiesta, C-Max and Grand C-Max. Ford noted that it will also be offered on the Transit Courier, Tourneo Courier, Transit Connect, Tourneo Connect, and EcoSport.
In the first quarter, the 1-liter EcoBoost engine was picked, on average, on approximately 30 percent of the Focus and Fiesta customers ordered, while orders for this engine cover almost half of the small MPV class B-Max.
