Dunlop Revealed In Geneva The New Tire Concept With Embedded Smart Chip
|   Friday, March 21, 2014
Dunlop, one of the manufacturers of high and ultra-high performance tires and one of the global leaders, revealed in the Geneva International Auto Show, 2014 edition, a new tire concept, designed to enhance the car's performance when cornering, braking and increase stability, thanks to a direct link which is done via a microchip embedded in the tire and the car's onboard computer.

This system is built on a microchip technology without battery attached to the inside of the tire.
The system transmits information about the tire pressure and the temperature, and other details identifying the tire, to the vehicle's onboard computer. Using this information, the car's central computer system can automatically refine algorithms for lateral and longitudinal control of the vehicle to deliver enhanced driving performance.

Improvements include reduced braking distance when the ABS (Automatic Braking System) no longer copes, improved response when cornering, improved gyration stability, and optimized stability control systems, all resulting from the data received by the on-board computer from the tires.

"Today's advanced vehicle control systems can greatly benefit from tire specific information. We have always understood that when we were able to gather this information, we could deliver new levels of driving performance to the car. Today we are showcasing a first concrete step in that direction as we begin to translate the wealth of information received by the tire back to improving and enhancing the overall driving experience. It is a major step forward" declared Marc Engel, senior engineer at Dunlop.

"Tire properties change significantly and tire type inflation and temperature play a major role. If a vehicle knows those dynamic properties, its control systems can take them into account and deliver an improved overall performance" continued Engel.

With this new technology, the chip is embedded in the tire, not mounted on the rim. This means that the information itself, specific to the tire can be incorporated into the chip. The placing inside the tire also means that the chip is not exposed to damage during the tire mounting, as compared to systems that are attached to the tire valve.

When consumers decide to change their tires with new ones that have the chip incorporated, they will be able to benefit from the new system.
The company installed this new system on its SportMaxx RT tires and is now in the testing phase for its implementation on the market. A dedicated launch is not taken into account in the testing phase.

This system was developed in partnership with Huf, a leading manufacturer of locks both mechanical and electrical, as well as pressure measuring systems and of telematic systems for the automotive industry worldwide, in an effort to develop cutting edge products and services that set the standards for industry performance.
