Driving the Volkswagen Golf TGI BlueMotion
|   Monday, March 17, 2014
The latest addition to Volkswagen's Golf lineup is a smart, efficient and fuel efficient vehicle that is bang on for budget and efficiency. It is everything that a modern day hatch back should be, while offering a range of engine options, interior trim levels and visual enhancement kits. Fit, finish and finesse is usually not as great as other premium segment European hatch backs, although it is well balanced.

Volkswagen is not quite satisfied with its current petrol, diesel and hybrid engine options, even though various laurels have been heaped, due to excellent performance.
They have attempted to use natural gas / petrol hybrid engines this time round. Extensive tests have been conducted to understand the reliability and viability of such a design, before mass production plans were made. Recently showcased at Geneva as the Golf TGI, this vehicle has high potential across global markets.

Volkswagen however does not have plans for a UK launch anytime soon, as re-fuelling infrastructure needs to be setup prior to launch. Rise of compressed natural gas demands, has helped car makers think of the advantages of building vehicles based on this technology. Skoda's Octavia G Tec, along with Audi's A3 G Tron, has taken advantage of this situation.

Sale of Compressed Natural Gas powered vehicles, have picked up in various European countries, although the United Kingdom is currently lagging behind. Hence, Volkswagen and Audi are the only companies gunning for a specific clientele, looking for gas propelled vehicles. There are quite a few options to choose from here as well. For example, you get a hatch back, sedan and coupe, powered by Compressed Natural Gas. This is sufficient to cater to current market needs.

Various countries are looking forward to legalizing unconventional fuel cell powered vehicles. This presents a grant opportunity for car makers to work on something innovative. Toyota is currently working on their Hydrogen powered cars, which is near completion. Volkswagen is offering a turbo charged version of their small 1.4 liter petrol engine that is currently available on their larger Golf.

Slight modifications have been made to this drive train too, to accommodate its hybrid stature. Even though it weight near 170 kg more than its sibling, this vehicle handles effortlessly. We took it for a spin on road and found it to be quite pleasant to drive. Interior space is sufficient for carrying passengers and luggage, even on long journeys. The cabin is well designed for its budget, while sufficient care has been taken to ensure a trouble free and comfortable ride.

However, this engine still has traces of non refinement, which needs to be done away with. We however appreciate Volkswagen's attempt to create something new and commercially viable, even though this technology is not in its nascent stages. Acceleration from 0 – 60 MPH is possible within 10.9 seconds, while a top speed of 121 MPH is officially claimed. These figures are not bad once you consider its technical specifications. Official price is yet to be confirmed, hence stay tuned.
