Driving the 2014 BMW 435i on Road and Track
|   Wednesday, January 22, 2014
BMW's latest 4 Series has found a range topper in the form of the 435i. This convertible is a sight for sore eyes, as BMW has been coming up with saloon, sedan and coupes mostly for the past couple of years, save for a few exceptional performance variants and convertibles. The 435i is one such convertible which has managed to draw in our attention, although we are yet to gauge people's reaction to this vehicle.

Even with its roof down, it is agreeably one of the most elegant designs we have.
Surprisingly though, it lacks power till a certain degrees, although it does a decent job of maintaining its predecessor's reputation. Torsion rigidity has increased over 40 percent, while 20 kg worth of equipments have been added to this vehicle. Slight improvements have been made, considering design and technology present in current generation BMW 3 and 4 Series vehicles.

This vehicle calls for a relaxed drive experience as you can easily take it for long distance vacations. Pull down the top and head on for a long weekend. Cruising is easily possible at 302 BHP, although you could always push down more for additional grunt. A bigger cabin provides ample space for driver and passengers, although the folding roof takes up a significant amount of space, off its boot.

A wind cover behind the headrest is an important addition on this car, which can be adjusted according to speed. An effective noise reducing headliner keeps surrounding noises at bay, when the roof is pulled down. There are minor glitches such as destabilization due to its roof. These are not expected from a premium brand such as BMW, which can make any journey quite frustrating.

However, refinement level is above average, which gives it a sporty yet elegant edge in its class. Priced at £46,520, BMW claims a top speed of 155 MPH, while it accelerates from 0 – 60 MPH within 5.5 seconds. Fuel economy is around 34.9 MPG (on a combined note), with CO2 emissions of 176 g/km.

Power comes from a 3.0 liter turbocharged petrol engine, displacing 302 BHP at 5,800 – 6,000 RPM, with 295 ft lb of torque, at 1,200 – 5,000 RPM.
The engine is mated to an eight speed automated transmission system, while this vehicle weighs a little over 1740 kg. Ride height was lowered, to give it an upper hand, while basic dimensions have changed, making the 435i convertible, longer, wider and lower. According to BMW's designing team, aerodynamics on this vehicle is quite advanced, so as to say, by convertible standards.

Major design elements have been retained from its predecessor, while its roof mechanism is hydraulically controlled. Various options are available for comfort, based on trim level, while heated seats, armrests, Electronic Stability Control, Satellite Navigation, Bluetooth, USB connectivity and WI-FI hub are some of its basic features. Leather upholstery is optional, while you get to select from various rim sizes as well. BMW is offering a value for money deal, which is quite reasonable considering different options.
