Detroit Electric Designs the SP: 01 All Electric Vehicle
|   Thursday, April 18, 2013
Detroit Electric, an electric car making firm was revived in late 2008 by ex Lotus CEO Albert Lam. The first vehicle from Detroit Electric has emerged and has been named the SP: 01 Sports Car. The vehicle has been designed on the same platform as the Lotus Elise and features technology used in the Tesla Roadster. However, the biggest difference that the SP: 01 feature is that it is different from any previously designed electric vehicle.

It is the fastest production electric vehicle and takes just under 3.
seconds to break the 0 – 60 MPH barrier. The electric motor powering the vehicle has been lifted off the Tesla Roadster although minor modifications see this vehicle through to the 155 MPH speed limit. These figures are possible due to the air cooled electric motor that has the capability of displacing 201 BHP along with 166 ft lbs of torque.

The engine is mated to a four speed manual transmission system that enhances the power displacement of the vehicle. The gearbox of the SP: 01 is a modified unit lifted off the Lotus Elise without the fourth and fifth gear option. The instant torque developed by the electric motor reduces the launch time and this is what accounts for the smooth acceleration of the SP: 01.

Using the clutch to move the vehicle is not required in case of an electric vehicle as the instantaneous torque of the electric motor ensures swift movement in any gear. Detroit Electric has designed this vehicle purely for the thrill. If a client is interested in checking out the top speed of a vehicle, the SP: 01 is the perfect cabin to be in.

Customers opting for the SP: 01 will also have the two speed automatic transmission system as optional on this vehicle. The two speed automatic transmission has been designed especially for hybrid and electric vehicles. The SP: 01 feature a body made out of carbon fiber and this has been done to keep weight at a bare minimum. The overall weight of this vehicle is 1090 kg and this is primarily due to the carbon fiber body.

The car's suspension has also been tuned to suit the driving style and the suspension and damper unit has been lifted off the Lotus Elise although a considerable amount of modification has been done on it. The SP: 01 packs in a 37 kWh battery pack and the SP: 01 is capable of travelling 190 miles on a single recharge. Detroit Electric claims that the SP: 01 gains total battery power after a charging period of just four hours.

Each unit of the SP: 01 will feature a smart phone on the dash board called the SAMI – Smart Phone Application Managed Infotainment System – which will allow passengers to connect to advanced options such as navigation, charge status, music player etc. Prices of the SP: 01 starts at $135,000 and Detroit Electric is set to manufacture just 999 units of the vehicle initially while mass production will begin depending upon demand.
