Designjunction 2014: MINI and Dezeen Present The "Future of Mobility"
|   Wednesday, September 03, 2014
With the online magazine Dezeen MINI has mandated six young designers who are in vogue to study how design and technology can transform the way we travel in the coming years.

Designers Pernilla Ohrstedt, Lucy McRae, Keiichi Matsuda, Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg, Matthew Plummer-Fernandez and Dominic Wilcox will present their views on the "Frontiers - the future of mobility," a pioneering exhibition design junction within the London Design Festival (September 17 to 21).

Each exhibit will be partly inspired by the spirit of the MINI brand, and the newly launched MINI, which combines iconic design and cutting edge technology. The six designers established in London will explore this topic in different shapes, which incorporates science, engineering, film, and performance art.

The architect Lucy McRae invites visitors to designjunction to take part in an interactive performance in which their bodies are wrapped in vacuum to be prepared for space travel. Inspired by artists working with NASA, McRae's installation will consist of a series of bags, in which visitors will be invited to come to prepare their bodies for the rigors of zero-gravity environment.

The experimental design of Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg will investigate genetically modified cars. Synthetic biological machines as suggested by the artist could evolve and could be moved as they are used and repaired so they are better suited to environments, like living organisms. "Would cars that are repaired in a hot place be different to cars that are repaired in a city full of pollution, or cars repaired somewhere humid?"

Designer and filmmaker Keiichi Matsuda's research explores the possibilities of augmented reality, which could be used to overlay information on traffic and road signs - all digital - over the physical world. Currently, augmented reality is limited to the use of physical interfaces - a tablet or headphones like Google Glass. Matsuda believes that time will change that. "People are looking into contact lenses as a way of introducing this digital overlay on the world, and the other big thing is projecting directly onto your retina."

In the future fully automatic and computer controlled cars will make airbags and crumple zones redundant, as proposed by artist, designer and British inventor Dominic Wilcox. So why would you not build a car from complicated stained glass? Safe cars and no future driver will free designers to create radically different concept cars, some in which you can stay and sleep while you are led to your destination.

Originally from British Columbia, artist Matthew Plummer-Fernandez, reinterprets the traditional doll arc on board vehicles as a personal companion, 3D printed, which is used to communicate with the car. The idea was inspired by the custom of little stick figures on the board, for good luck. "These avatars would have a personal relationship with the driver. So even if you change vehicle you could take this avatar with you and install it into your next vehicle" he explains.

The architect Pernilla Ohrstedt will design the MINI exhibition space from designjunction and will present its approach on future trips. Pernilla states that our cars will be able, while driving, to collect detailed 3D scans of the environment soon and will explore how we can use it to create real-time 3D maps of cities.
