Designing The New Nissan Qashqai

Nissan has presented the new Qashqai generation. The representatives of the brand design department responsible for the model that gave rise to the C Segment SUV, talked about the defining features of the new Qashqai. Statements made by Taisuke Nakamura and Shiro Nakamura, the Chief Designer of Nissan Europe, respectively Chief Creative Officer, noted that the feeling of safety and a feeling of quality were the two key ideas to redesign the famous SUV belonging to the Nissan brand.

Until reaching these two concepts, Nissan designers had other ideas in mind, drawing inspiration from a trio of features: "Athletic Agility, Smart Premium and In Control", the three themes of each design element applied to new Qashqai. The design features created by Nissan's Europe design team are rooted in the history of Qashqai, and follow the route that the Japanese have established with the launch of the compact SUV's first generation.

Nissan's designers say that the new Qashqai gives the feeling of movement by reducing the aesthetic contrast from the interior part and the upper part of the bodywork. The new design has brought new elements to the bottom of the bodywork of the Qashqai, such as an air diffuser integrated into the rear bumper, which gives the SUV a similar appearance to that of premium models, and also offers the sensation of movement as desired by the brand designers.

Like many other recent SUVs, the new Qashqai follows the idea of sporty design achieved by tilting the roof, by sharpening the line of the windows and changing the front grille. The new front grille has the Nissan logo framed in a "V" that starts from the front bumper, and ascends onto the hood up to the A pillars. As explained by Nissan designers, all efforts are intended to give off the feeling of dynamism.

Another aesthetical trick applied to the third generation of the Qashqai is lengthening the glazed surfaces and increasing the embossments wings. Thus, the wheel rims appear to be higher in relation to the bodywork, and the middle of the vehicle will be better link the four corners. The Qashqai's ceiling has a more pronounced line meant to offer the feeling of speed, explains Taisuke Nakamura.

Just like safety, the technology and quality levels are difficult to integrate in the design because each person has a different perception of these elements. Nissan's designers say they have solved these problems at an early stage of the design by integrating the optical blocks into original sketches and keeping them in the final version.

The headlights and taillights on the Qashqai were designed with the thought of a boomerang shape and are designed to make the Qashqai recognizable from a distance. The form inside the headlights is often called "the visual brand identity" and is the thing that sets it apart from competitors in the dark.

Offering Qashqai passengers a feeling of security and control inside the car was another priority for the designers. Taisuke Nakamura elaborates: "The main instrument panel is a major element of the new design. Visually, it expands the width of the cockpit and flows into the door design. This creates a focus point at the centre for all the important displays and makes passengers feel protected by the car. To emphasise this feeling of protection, the lower section of the dashboard features padded panels, along with additional pads on the centre console for the knees."
