Delphi Launches First Autonomous Vehicle That Will Cross America
|   Tuesday, April 07, 2015
The car from Delphi has gone from California with New York as its destination, marking the longest distance traveled by an autonomous vehicle in North America.

Delphi Automotive demonstrates its full capabilities of active safety technologies through the longest journey ever traveled by an autonomous vehicle in North America. The journey, which involves crossing the coast, began near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco on March 22 and will cover about 3,500 miles (representing over 5,600 km).

The trip will enable engineers from Delphi to collect critical data and to further promote the development of active safety technology in this rapidly growing segment of the automotive industry. During this trip, the vehicle will be subject to a number of special driven tests from different meteorological and environments conditions, to potential road hazards - things that can never be truly tested in a laboratory.

"Delphi had great success testing its car in California and on the streets of Las Vegas. Now it's time to put our vehicle to the ultimate test by broadening the range of driving conditions. This drive will help us collect invaluable data in our quest to deliver the best automotive grade technologies on the market" stated Jeff Owens, Delphi Chief Technology Officer.

Presented recently on the streets of Las Vegas at CES 2015 (Consumer Electronics Show), the autonomous vehicle from Delphi has a full range of technologies and features to make possible this journey, including:
- Radar vision system and advanced driver assistance (ADAS);
- The multi-domain controller: next-generation microprocessor with multiple functions and features;
- V2V / V2X: wireless communications technology that extends the range of the ADAS system functionality;
- Intelligent software which allows the vehicle to make complex decisions, such as those taken by the driver, when autonomously driving in the real world;
- System assistance in blocked road traffic;
- Autopilot for highway with lane changing;
- Autopilot for driving in city;
- Automatic Valet Parking.

The active safety technologies from Delphi allow the vehicle to take instant complexes decisions such as stopping, continuing at an intersection with four stop signs, the possibility of timing an entry on the highway, or calculating the safe clearances maneuvering in order to avoid a bicyclist on a city street. Many of these driven scenarios, has been a limitation for most of existing technologies on the market today.

"Our comprehensive product portfolio and vehicle integration expertise uniquely positions Delphi as one of only a handful of companies with the ability to provide automakers complete automated driving solutions" Owens said.

With products that are scalable, flexible and affordable, Delphi is committed to support car manufacturers accelerating the way for autonomous vehicles. Many active safety technologies required to achieve this vision are used right now to help create a safer future on the road worldwide.
The trip is also a major milestone for Delphi, which was until 1999 part of General Motors. This journey demonstrates the reliability of automobiles in this branch of the industry.
