DeLorean DMC-12 - The "Back To The Future" Star Is Back Into Production
|   Sunday, February 07, 2016
The legendary DeLorean is back into production. The DeLorean will be reborn as the Phoenix Bird. The car in the movie „Back to the Future" will be produced once again after a break of 33 years and will have a price of 100,000 dollars.
The protagonist of the "Back to the Future" trilogy, the DeLorean DMC-12 is legendary and will become a real time machine after all, seeing that after a 3 decade break it returns from the past to the future.
The DeLorean DMC-12 will be rebuilt as a faithful replica of the original model, with an updated engine and other modern amenities.

When the first movie in the trilogy "Back to the Future" appeared in 1985 the company DeLorean was already bankrupt for 3 years. But the DeLorean DMC-12 model had consolidated its legend status in automotive history, becoming a synonym for the title of "time machine". The company founded by John DeLorean built a plant in Northern Ireland. Production of cars lasted only from early 1981 until the end of 1982, during which about 9,000 DMC-12 copies were built.
A real revolution at the time of its launch, the DeLorean DMC-12 was designed by the famous Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro to have butterfly doors, a rear engine and a steel body, unpainted. The innovations did not bring commercial success, but maintained an active fan base.
From there it was raised by the British entrepreneur Stephen Wynne, who in 1995 founded a car company called DeLorean Motor Company. Besides the rights to use the name, he received permission to produce parts and recondition existing machines in a workshop in Humble, Texas.
With the approval of the law that allows the reproduction of models that existed 25 or more years ago without them having to comply with safety standards imposed in the US by the NHTSA and EPA, the DeLorean Motor Company finally has a chance to take up production again of the DMC-12.
Already this year will see some 300 DMC-12 copies produced which will be marketed in 2017.
Production is limited to 325 copies annually and it requires the use of engines which are compliant with the rules from the year of production. The motors may come from other manufacturers.
Thus, the DeLorean Motor Company wants to mount a V6 engine with a displacement of less than 3 liters, as the original DMC-12 had. Stephen Wynne told the US press of talks with two American manufacturers to supply engines, one of which is GM.
Prices of an assembled copy start at 65,500 dollars, and include warranty. The company also sells used models with prices between 30,000 and 50,000 dollars, which also include warranty.
The price of a new DeLorean DMC-12 will be about 100,000 dollars, and will be influenced by the choice of engine. The price is double that of an old DeLorean produced 33 years. It will keep as much of the original design and details, but it will adapt more efficient brakes and will upgrade the interior.
Let us hope that the new/old DMC-12 is faster, with more enjoyable driving and more comfortable than the original car, which only looks good, but did not deliver that good a performance.
