Dated Pictures of the Saab 900 Launched; Alternate Fuel Technology Set To Take World by Storm
|   Wednesday, February 13, 2013
The first images of the Saab 900 have been leaked. The vehicle was supposed to go into production last year and was based on the Phoenix platform. However, the car was expected to be launched post 2010 when General Motors sold the brand to Spyker Cars. The vehicle has been codenamed Project 540 and is based on the five door platform. A Sedan and Classic Convertible were also planned.

The original 900 was designed by Jason Catriota and had been done to resemble the classic vehicles of the 90s.
Although the vehicle has a touch of the Audi A5, certain design aspects are purely Saab. The vehicle was expected to be powered by a 1.6 liter turbo charged petrol engine and featured braking potential and automatic start / stop to save power.

The engine was expected to displace 200 BHP while BMW had announced a new engine developed along with Saab during August 2010. The Saab 900 measured 4.5 meters in length and was scheduled to be available with a hybrid drive train as well. The rear axle mounted electric motor was being developed by American Axle along with Saab and the final product is expected to be used in another model in future.

The Saab designed Phoenix platform was one of the most customizable platforms ever and this was chosen for the 900, as the vehicle could feature considerable upgrades later on. The Phoenix platform as designed with inputs from Scania and the engineers worked closely while designing the platform. The basic dimensions of the platform were 5 m, 9.5 m and 5.2 m and was developed keeping in mind the Asian markets.

The 9 – 5 models were expected to feature the Phoenix platform but the hope was short lived. In 2010 Saab discarded the 900 under its new administration and the fossils of the 900 have emerged after three years.

Electric vehicles are expected to take on the mainstream market within the next 15 years according to an estimate run by ex Volvo Chief Stefan Jacoby. Jacoby quit Volvo in 2012 and is currently pursuing other segments of the automotive industry. Electric vehicles will be the most sought after alternate fuel technology as they are clean, cheap and easy to use.

However, electric vehicles do not have a massive range of travelling and this could act as a negative aspect if not developed. Overheating is also another problem with electric vehicles above 40 degrees and this need to be sorted out too.

Jacoby also commented that posh vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf are suited to the higher segment of the society as they are pricey and not as effective. Electric vehicles need to fulfill the basic requirements such as covering specific miles without the need to recharge apart from being environment friendly and the modern electric vehicles are not up to this challenge. The industry is heading off in a positive direction and the future could have a lot on offer in the alternate fuel cell industry.
