Data On Maserati's Upcoming Mid-Engine GranSport
|   Sunday, June 17, 2012
It hasn't been that long since the world found out that Maserati is planning on launching a new mid-engine sports car that will compete with Porsche's 911 and may even resurrect the GranSport title. The announcement took place last month, and Maserati CEO Harald Wester didn't say much except everything is still in an embryonic stage with nothing solid to go by.

Since then things have changed a bit. Wester sat down to talk with EVO and there he reveled some information about the sports car.
Things started by him saying he wants the car to be "the most pure expression of Maserati sportiness possible."

That would help the brand greatly in its expansion efforts. Speaking of which, the company is planning to launch several new models such as the redesigned Quattroporte, a production version of the Kubang SUV, and a new mid-size sedan.

"Imagine having something like the Alfa Romeo 4C but for Maserati. It would have a carbon fiber monocoque and a mid-engined layout, just like the Alfa 4C, as this gives the stylists the most freedom to design something really stunning." Why the reference to the 4C?

Harald Wester is also the one behind Alfa Romeo's helm, and he showed that he can handle things well, judging by the success enjoyed by the 4C. Now he wants to build on that achievement and take Maserati's nameto new heights, as well as its profit figures.

The new car will be longer than the Alfa 4C, because the engine will be mounted longitudinally, thus a longer wheelbase is necessary. Serving as the heart of everything will be a 4.7 liter V8 engine rated at 454 horsepower. Power will be send to the rear wheels, naturally, via a new double-clutch transmission specially developed for Maserati. We may even see the gearbox used in the Ferrari 458 Italia at work. Wester said that alternative powertrains are being investigated, but the option exposed above is the best for what he has in mind. Also, its sizes will be similar to those of the 458, standing at about 4400 mm.

As already mentioned, carbon fiber will be used, quite possibly on a large scale. The point is to reduce weight significantly, to about 1200 kg. For comparison, the closest rival to the GranSport, the 458 Italia weighs 1458 kg. Wester has plans to offer the car is such ways that competition will be undercut; the price tag is where those plans mostly lie.

"I want this car to be better to drive than a 911 Turbo, but I also want it to cost less," he stated. "We won't limit the production of this car, but I'd like to think that we will sell, let's say, between 1500 and 2000 units a year."
The future is looking bright for Maserati, but at this point everything above is in the mind of a single person, even if he is the CEO. It seems likely he will succeed in convincing people to make his ideas reality, but even so, don't expect anything until 2015 is here; maybe not even then.
